1.2 Timeline

  • Plankalkul

    Plankalkul was developed in 1948 by a man named Konrad Zuse. It was developed for engineering purposes and was the first high-level language developed.
  • Fortran

    Fortran was developed in 1957 by IBM with the team being led by John Backus. It was developed for general purpose and numeric computing. It in full means formulation translation.
  • MATH-MATIC

    MATH-MATIC was developed in 1957 by Remington Rand and was developed for business-oriented applications.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was made in 1958 by John McCarthy and is used in AI.
  • COBOL

    COBOL was a language developed in 1959 by the Conference on Data Systems Languages. (CODASYL) It is used for business applications and stands for Common Business Oriented Language.
  • RPG

    RPG was made in 1959 by IBM and is used for business applications. It stands for Report Program Generator.
  • BASIC

    BASIC was developed in 1964 by John Kemeny & Thomas Kurtz. It is used in a variety of applications and BASIC stands for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.
  • LOGO

    LOGO was made in 1967 by a team at MIT led by Wallace Feurzeig and is used to teach kids how to program and the basics.
  • B

    B was made in 1969 by Bell Labs Circa and led by Ken Thompson & Dennis Ritchie. It is used for "recursive, non-numeric, machine independent applications."
  • C

    C was developed inn 1972 by Brian Kernighan & Dennis Ritchie. It is used for system development.
  • PASCAL

    PASCAL was made in 1973 by Niklaus Wirth and used to develop well structured & well organized programs.
  • ML

    ML was developed by Robin Milner in 1973 and is a general purpose language. It stands for MetaLanguage.
  • C++

    C++ was made in 1979 by Bjarne Stroustrup & is used to make software. Means C+1/C1.
  • SQL

    SQL was made by IBM in 1979 and is a special-purpose language. It stands for Structured Query Language.
  • ADA

    ADA was made in 1980 by Dr. Jean Ichbiah for "large, long lived applications." It is named after Augusta Ada Lovelace.
  • Visual Basic

    Visual Basic was made by Microsoft and is used for visual development.
  • Python

    Python was developed in 1991 by Guido van Rossum and is a general purpose language.
  • PHP

    PHP was made in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf and is used for web applications. It stands for Hypertext Preprocessor.
  • Delphi

    Delphi was made in 1995 by Borland and is an object-oriented programming language.
  • Java

    In 1995 a group called the green team, led by James Gosling. Used in a lot or applications and websites.
  • Javascript

    Javascript was made by Brendan Eich and is an object-oriented language.
