    Three ships carrying 105 settlers selected a site along Chesapeake Bay for a new settlement, Jamestown. It was the first settlement of the Virgina colony. It was also the first successful colony in America, so it started the beginning of a nation.

  • Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower Compact was the basis of government in the Plymouth colony. It was the first written framework of government established in the United States, so it led to future laws and democracy.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    It was the territory of the western United States that extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains between the Gulf of Mexico and the Canadian Border. The United States bought it from France. This sped up the expansion of the western United States and gave America more control.
  • Indian Removal Act

    President Andrew Jackson signed this wich allowed him to negotiate with the Indians in the South to move to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for the Indian homelands. It was more of a forced thing. This led to future removal acts of Native Americans that were way more harsh.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    This was the route traveled by the Native Americans thanks to the Indian Removal Act, which forced them to relocate. It was about 2,200 miles long. this greatly affected the population of the Native Americans in American because thousands were gone. That is why the population is so scarce today. It ended in 1838.
  • Prohibition

    Manufacture, sale, and transportation of liquor was outlawed. This led to the passing of the 21st Amendment, which stated that alochol can be sold and manufactured again. It was passed on January 16, 1920 and ended with the passing of the 21st Amendment on December 5, 1933.
  • Great Depression

    The stock market fell on October 29, 1929, causing all those invested in it to lose their money and millions of people lost their jobs. This was the start of government involvement in the economy and society. The Great Depression ended in 1939.
  • Cold War

    The Cold War was a state of political tension and military rivalry between nations, especially between the United states and the Soviet Union after World War II. This led to the fall of the Soviet Union and caused the United States to become the superior country. It officially ended on December 25, 1991.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    This was the struggle to get equal rights for all men women of color. This led to equal rights and the end of segregation, which greatly impacted life of the African American population in the United States. It is thought that it started on this day, the day Rosa Parks wouldn't give up her seat. It ended around 1965.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    This wall was the seperation of East and West Germany. On this day, an East German government offical made an announcement that people could now cross the border. This led to the reunification of East and West Germany. It also showed that Ameica was dominate over Communism and that Communisim was falling.
