The guards were given their uniforms , with this they were given handcuffs, whistles and dark glasses to make sure that eye contact with the prisoners was not possible. The guards were also told that physical violence was not allowed.

To create a mock prison, Zimbardo converted the basement of Stanford University. He then selected 21 male college students and randomly assigned roles for them. These roles were either being a prison guard or prisoner. The participants were paid $15 per day.

Because Zimbardo wanted to make this simulation as real as possible, the guards arrested the prisoners in their homes and took them to the police station. This was a surpise arrest.

Only 36 hours into the experiment and prisoner #8612 has had a breakdown. They believed that he was suffering as he was acting crazy and unstable.

In the middle of the night the prisoners had barricaded themselves in their cell and were yelling at the guards. The situation was under control after they opened the cells and caught the prisoners however they were stripped and some were placed in "the hole"

The prison guards had decided to have cell number 3 as the "good prison cell". This was for the prisoners that were least involved in the rebellion and they were given special privileges. This included beds, better meals and shorter work routines.

Stu Levin becomes disobedient, he refuses to do any of the chores or come out of his cell. The rest of the prisoners then call him a bad prisoner. Zimbardo offers to release him but he says "I have to back in, to prove to my buddies that i am not a bad prisoner". Zimbardo however releases him despite of this.
