    Discovery of penicillin
    On September 28, 1928 Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. Dr. Fleming was searching for an antiseptic that could treat deep infected wounds. As it turns out Dr. Fleming discovered Penicillin by accident.Dr. Fleming was working on a project using staphylococci when he discovered a culture contaminated with a fungus and that fungus had killed the staphylococci surrounding the fungus. Over the years Penicillin has been used to many infections caused by bacteria.

    October 29th 1929 The Great Depression started, this was one of the longest-lasting economic drops in history. The Great Depression was a worldwide crises. The Great Depression had a effect on both the rich and the poor. People lost everything. Companies went out of business. The Great Depression caused trade between nations to drop. Recovery from the Great Depression was partly fueled by WW II. The war created a lot of jobs and caused governments to spend a lot of money.

    On March 1st 1932 the child of Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from the family’s mansion in Hopewell New Jersey. Charles Lindbergh was an international celebrity when he became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. A ransom note was found demanding ransom for the child. The Lindbergh’s were flooded with offers of assistance, a lot of false clues. The child was found dead a mile from home. As a result the Government made kidnapping a federal crime.

    Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor
    On January 30, 1933 Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. Germany was going through tough economic times, this had a lot to due with the terms of the Versailles Treaty. Germany was still bitter about the loss of WW I. Hitler was able to focus this discontent into support for his Nazi party. Hitler wanted to do away with politics and make Germany a powerful, unified state. Hitler put Nazi supports in key positions and there was nothing that Germans could do to stop them.

    The Twenty-First Amendment
    On December 5, 1933 the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed repealing the Eighteenth Amendment which made the creation, sale and consumption of alcohol. The Eighteenth Amendment was commonly known as Prohibition. The amendment failed to reduce crime rates and the negative effects of alcohol. The Twenty-first Amendment was unique in that it was the first and only amendment to be ratified by state conventions instead of state legislatures.

    Appointment of Henry Hastie as Federal Judge
    In March 1937, William Henry Hastie was appointed judge of the Federal District Court in the Virgin Islands. Mr. Hastie was appointed by President Roosevelt. Hastie became the nation’s first African American Federal judge. Mr. Hastie worked as an aide to the Secretary of War from 1940 to 1942 and advocated for the equal treatment of African Americans in the Army. Mr. Hastie will be remembered for his distinguished career as a judge as well as a fighter for the rights of his people.
