The book starts out talking about the the instructions to Ember and how to keep it safe they are going to put it inside a box that will open at a set time. They will give it to the mayor to keep safe until it is time to be opened. It then goes on telling of a girl named Lina who is going to get her job picked that day at school. She is chosen to be a pipe worker but trades with a boy named Doon who was chosen as a messager. She then goes to her job and loves being a messenger. pages 636 -

Lina is a few weeks into her job and her grandma is looking for something that her grandpa talked about and she doesn't no what it is but she is very worried about it. Mrs. Murdo starts coming over to Linas house because she is lonely and Linas Grandma doesn't want her there. Lina starts hearing about lack of supplies and worries about the future and she also starts to worry. pages 708 -

Lina finds the instructions to the city of ember and finds it very interesting and but doesn't no what it is. Yet most of the paper is gone because poppy had chewed on it. Lina then thinks it might be the important thing that her grandma is looking for. Lina tapes the paper back together. Lina invites doon over to look at the box and her picture she drew . While her granma doesn't feel good. pages 801 -

These pages talk about how how Lina and Doon run off to go find what is through the door in the sewers were doon works. They run off and hide in the school beacause they are being looked for by the mayor because they told of this door to the guard. When Lina goes to leave a note to tell that they are leaving Lina is captured and taken to the Mayor. The lights of Ember go out and she ends up escaping and metting back up with doon and then they go to find the door and see whats inside. tot pg. 853 -
