    On this date William HArtsfield was appointed mayor of Atlanta. Gave major support to the civil rights movement. Was the longest serving mayor in Atlanta. Never finished school.
  • Richard B. Russell is Elected Governor

    Richard B. Russell is Elected Governor
    Richard B. Russell was elected Governor of GA from 1931-1933, also serving in the House of Representatives for ten years. He helped the US prepare for the war, also bringing 15 military bases to GA. He was also one of the youngest people to be elected into office.

    First Concentration Camp Established
    Not much to say here, other than the horror that was the holocaust. Millions of Jews, Gypsies, cripples, and anyone veiwed as unfavorable by the Nazi party were tortured and slaughtered at these concentration camps.

    The founding of Bell Aircraft, a company started in quaint rural Georgia. After Pearl Harbor, this company prospered and helped contribute to the war effort with the production of technallogically- advanced aircraft of the time.

    The beginning of the 2nd Great War. It was triggered by an economic crisis in Germany, allowing a diciplined, but violent group to come into power. The War officially began with the invasion of Poland.

    Once Roosavelt announced the Emergency Shipbuilding Program, this port was chosen to be part of the cargo vessel production. Each Ship was capable of hauling thousands of pounds of cargo at a time.

    Triggered by an embargo from the U.S. on Japanese goods. The sudden suprise attack of the American Pearl Harbor from Japanese war planes. This event made America join WWII.

    Savannah Port Put Into Production
    Another shipyard is chosen to create vessels for the war effort. This time, many women and African-Americans are employed due to most of the white men being overseas. Originally meant to build only thirty-six ships, but ended up creating eighty-eight total.

    The end of WWII marked the beginning of a new era, even for Georgians. Industreal companies began moving south, buisnesses began to grow, and desegregation began to take hold.
  • USS Carl Vinson Commissioned

    USS Carl Vinson Commissioned
    On this date the most expensive ship in the world (at the time), the USS Carl Vinson was launched into the ocean. This ship was named after a man with the same name, also called the 'Father of Two Ocean Navy.' This man also received the Presidential 'Medal of Freedom.'
