    Improved recruitment rates during the war
    Boosted morale during the war
    Helped Canada in the war by shooting down planes
    Helped boost Canada`s rep. for the other countries

    Jeremiah Alvin Jones
    <b>When:</b>
    Mar 30, 1858-Nov 23, 1950
    <b>What:</b>
    Captured German machine gun
    Should have received an award but didn`t (racism)
    Public fought for his award and he was later given the Medallion for Distinguished Service
    <b>Where:</b>
    Battle of Vimy Ridge
    <b>How:</b>
    Crossed no man`s land, threw grenade, killing soldiers
    The rest carried machine gun back to Canada`s side
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    A step towards treating everyone equally (which is what Canada is known for today)
  • Battle At Sea

    Battle At Sea
    <b>When:</b>
    1914-1918
    <b>Where:</b>
    Halifax, Nova Scotia and North Atlantic Ocean
    <b>How:</b>
    Canada sent ships full of supplies and soldiers to Europe for the war.
    In 1917, there were so many U-boat attacks that Canada stated using the Convoy System (where many small ships were protected by larger and more powerful ones from U-Boats while crossing the Atlantic)
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    Helped develop Canada`s Royal Navy after the war because of the leftover sailors and warships.

  • Second Battle of Ypres

    Second Battle of Ypres
    <b>Where:</b>
    Ypres, Belgium
    <b>How they fought: </b>
    Trench warfare
    Introduction of chemical gas by Germans to bring out soliders from trenches
    French retrearted leaving Canadians to hold the line until reinforcements.
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    Dr. Cluny MacPherson of the Newfoundfland Regiment invented gas masks
    Showed that Canada was loyal, brave and competent to the other countries which was one of the reasons Britain allowed us to seperate from them

    Created the first gas masks used in WWI
    <b>When:</b>
    Some time after Second Battle of Ypres
    <b>Where:</b>
    France
    <b>How:</b>
    Saw need after Battle at Ypres
    Took helmet from captured German and used chemicals to neutralize chlorine gas
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    Gas masks helped (and still do) save many people from death, etc. in WWI
    It was a major reason why gas attacks became less useful in WWI
    Showed our dedication in the war which is one reason why the Britain let us seperate

    Battle of the Somme
    <b>Where:</b>
    Somme River, France
    <b>How:</b>
    Non-stop shooting for days but poorly made bullets caused it to be useless
    Then an advance across no man`s land
    Suffered huge casualties for very little gain
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    Influenced Canada`s break from Britain because Canada was forced to go to war for Britain and suffered many casualties because of it as shown by this battle
    Helped improve our military tactics (e.g. the use of the creeping barrage at Vimy Ridge)

    Battle of Vimy Ridge
    <b>Where:</b>
    Vimy Ridge, France
    <b>How:</b>
    Creeping Barrage: shot machine guns for cover and advancing at the same time
    Used maps to find strategic ways through the no man`s land
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    This battle showed that Canada had the strength and unity to be their own country as all the Canadian soldiers fought there together and were the reason France kept Vimy.
    They were noticed as Canadians, not part of the British.

    Canada
    <b>How:</b>
    Men 20-45 years filled out registration forms
    Given identification cards to carry with them at all times Received letters in the mail later if they had to go to war
    If avoided, they would be punished
    Caused riots in Quebec
    <b>Importance to Canada: </b>
    Women had to fill in at jobs in Canada left
    Some got the ability to vote
    Without conscription, wouldn`t have enough soldiers to win
    Mistreatment of French & Aboriginal Canadians caused them to get future benefits

    <b>Where:</b>
    Paris, France
    <b>How:</b>
    Countries that participated in the war (with a few exceptions) went to Paris to negotiate terms for Germany
    Germany had to give reparations, give up land, give up colonies and restrict their military
    Each country then signed the treaty
    <b>Importance to Canada:</b>
    Canada received reparations from Germany
    Canada signed the treaty for themselves, not by Britain
    Therefore being treated separatly from Britain from then on
