  • Austria declares war on Serbia

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Russia Mobilizes troops to the Austrian Border to assist Serbia. These events were the true beginning of WWI.
  • 1st Battle of the Marne

    This was the first major battle on the Western Front. the battle French forces were hurled at German forces to cause the Germans to retreat. This is the first battle to stop the German advance into France

    Russians pushed out of Austria

    In December of 1914, Austrian and German forces were able to force the Russians out of Austria. This lessened the pressure on the Austrian military because Russia was no longer invading their homeland
  • Beggining of the Battle of Gallipoli

    Battle where The British tried to capture Constantinople in an attempt to create a trade route to Russia and to possibly take the Ottomans out of the war.
  • Battle of Verdun

    The battle was the longest lasting battle of WWI. In this battle, Germany believed that the French would do anything they could to protect Verdun, this hypothesis was correct. more than half a million lives were lost on both sides in the battle.

    BAttle of the Somme

    This was a major battle on the Western Front, this is because this was when the British entered into WWI. The British goal for the battle of the Somme was to take pressure off of the French at Verdun. The battle of the Somme was a disaster for the Brtitish as very little was gained from it.

    Unrestricted Submarine Warfare begins

    In January of 1917, Germany suffering from a shortage of food began unrestricted Submarine warfare to allow supply ships to enter German waters.
  • United States declares war

    After the Zimmermann telegram was revieled to the American public, the United States headed down the path into war. The U.S. enters war after a passenger vessel is destroyed by a German u-boat.
  • Russia gains new leadership

    In November of 1917, at the end of the second Russian revolution, a new communist leader by name of Bolshevik takes control of Russia. Bolshevik becoming ruler of Russia paved the path for Russia to become the USSR
  • Beggining of the Second battle of the Marne

    After Germany signed a truce with Russia, Germany dedicated all its forces to the battle of the Marne which ends in defeat for the Germans. This event was effectively the last battle of WWI.
  • End of World War I

    After the signing of the armistice between France and Germany, World War I came to an end.
  • Signing of the Treaty of Versailles

    The treaty of Versailles was signed by all of the allied powers. The treaty created the league of nations in an attempt to stabilize Europe.
