The island had three military airfields that the U.S. wanted to capture to use to invade mainland Japan. While its believed that only about 200 of the 21,000 stationed soldiers on the island were killed but almost 7,000 Marines lost their lives on the island.

To get the Japanese armed forces to surrender on August 9, 1945 11:02 AM The U.S unleashed another atomic bomb named Fat Man on Nagasaki killing 55,000.
