During World War 1 different kinds of Dogs were used in the war. The dogs helped alot in numerous different tasks. Over Thousands of Dogs were used in the war. In 1914, both sides have large amounts of dogs on there side to help. -
A month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Austro-Hungarian government declared war on Serbia. In six days, European countries declared war upon one another. Then serbia starts militarizing there attack on Austria. This officially starts WW1. -
German troops crossed the border into Belgium for the first battle of the war. They attacked the defended city of Liege. Leaving death and destruction, shooting civilians, and the execution of a Belgian priest. The Germans advanced through Belgium towards France. -
The Battle of Marne was the first use of radio and automotive transport in troops of wartime. The French commander-in-chief ordered an offensive in September 1914. General Michel-Joseph Maunouny's French Sixth Army opened a gap between Germany's 1st 2nd armies. This began a type of war that would be remembered as trench warfare. -
Along the western front, in holiday Spirit, there were celebrations in the trenches. There was also gestures of goodwill between enemies. They had a good game of soccer and they laughed and visited.They also even shared some food. -
Germans began using a chemical weapon with a gas attack on Russian positions during the Battle of Bolivia. However, low temperatures frequently froze in the shells. The first successful weapon was on April 22, 1915. This weapon was effective but had many flaws, such as if the wind changed direction. -
Forbes Allan wrote to his father telling him that he saw his brother Andrew overseas several times. Even tho he will see him soon, that will be the last time he gets to see his brother overseas, since he will be leaving France shortly. Another thing that Forbes added in the letter was that on New Year's, they had a fire, and it was the first time it didn't rain for a month. -
The German soldiers launched what would become the last German offensive of the war. The Offending French forces were joined by 85,000 American troops as well as some of the British troops in the Second Battle of the Marne. The Allies successfully defeated the German soldiers and launched their own counteroffensive just three days later. This was the second battle of Marne. -
For the 2nd Christmas, the soldiers had a Christmas meal. For the meal, there was cream of tomato soup, baked macaroni, cheese, turkey, celery, potatoes, cranberry sauce, salad, and stewed corn. This came with pumpkin pie, ginger cakes, and bread and butter. Along with coffee, cigars, ice cream, and entertainment by personnel. -
Allan Forbes had received a letter from John. J Parishing. The letter was a congradulations letter for a successful conclusion of the war. in wich they were told that there service had been a major part in the war. He continued to serve in France untill has discharge. -
The Germans sank the Lusitania, carrying hundreds of Americans, in May 1915. In February 1917, Congress passed a $250 million arms apportions bill intended to make America ready for war. Germany sank 4 more US merchant ships on April 2nd. Woodrow Wilson appeared before Congress, declaring war on them. When the war really got serious. -
Allen wrote to his father that he was expecting to be out by June 15th, but when their space was all cleaned up, men came to tell them that it was going to be used as a German war camp. Allen and other soldiers woke up to find 1,000 prisoners in their camp. Although it was the greatest feat that any of the soldier had received, it means that they had to stay 4 more months. Allen wrote to his dad that he was sick and discussed of the army. -
Forbes wrote to his father saying that he got a letter from Scotland. They said he should spend his leave with them, and if it is possible, he will try to do this. Forbes wrote that there is nothing that would please him better than to see some of Scotland. -
World War 1 officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versaille. Among the Allied Powers with little participation by Germany it was signed. the treaty was 15 parts and 440 articles after strict enforcement for 5 years. The French assented to the modification of important provisions. -
Forbes Allan was 24 when he enlisted in the United States Army on December 15, 1917. He lives in Boston, Massachusetts. Before the war, Forbes was just a clerk until he enlisted. On July 2, 1919, he was discharged from the war, in great physical shape and excellent character. During the war, no wounds were received in service.
