The British and French met the Germans at the Marne River. The battle made it clear that neither side could win the war quickly or easily.

A German U-boat torpedoed the British passenger liner called the Lusitania near the coast of Ireland. More than 1,000 people died. 128 of those people were Amercians.

To break the standstill the Germans launched the Battle of Verdun in northeasteren France. This battle was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of war. More than 750,000 French and German soldiers were dead. Many were also injured.

German U-boat attacked the unarmed French passenger ship Sussex. Several Americans were injured. Germany began to fear the U.S. might join the war, so they offered money to those injured on the Sussex. They also promised to warn neutral ships and passenger vessels before attacking.

While the Battle of Verdun was going on, the Allies launched their own battle- the Battle of Somme. Tis battle also made horrifying causualities and the Allies only gained 7 miles.

The revolution was an effort to overthrow the government. The Russians defeated their ruler, so now their government would be more democratic. The new rulers said that they would have free elections and promised to keep fighting Germany.

President Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war against Germany. After some debate, Congress decided that the nation had to defend its rights if it wished to remian a world power.

The battle lasted about 7 weeks. It was hard for soldiers because they struggled over the rugged, heavily-forested ground. Many soldiers died. The Allies won in early November.
