For instance, the Battle of the Atlantic lasted from 1939 to 1941 and took place on the sea, using the Allied navy to block Germany. The Allies' involvement in the Pacific War began when the Japanese invaded the Malaysian and Hong Kong and also attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Malaya, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong were all controlled by the British during the Second World War, so when the Japanese attacked, the Allies went against the Japanese. Japan wanted to compete with western countries to be the top producer, which might explain why they invaded.

Hong Kong was the first place Canadians fought a land battle in the Second World War. Almost 2,000 troops from Winnipeg and Quebec City — sent to Hong Kong expecting little more than guard duty — fought bravely against the overwhelming power of an invading Japanese force. When the British colony surrendered on Christmas Day, 290 Canadians had been killed in the fighting.

Canada's involvement in World War II especially came out strongly in the Battle of Dieppe. One reason for the Battle of Dieppe was that it improved the Allies' overall morale. But over half the people who fought in the battle of Dieppe had died within 10 hours of the battle. Also, many of these soldiers became prisoners or were badly wounded; The Battle of Dieppe sustained many losses for both Germans and Allies.

In the Mediterranean, Allies and Axis powers were fighting for control over Italy. From 1943 to 1945, the Allies attempted to liberate Italy from being captured by the Axis. Both the invasion of Sicily in 943 and the invasion of the Italian mainland lead to Germany's surrender of Italy in 1945.

The United States detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in armed conflict.
