The Nye Committee ruling

Apr 12, 1934

The Nye Committee reported an increase in profits for arm dealers. This scared many of the United States' citizens and they turned to isolationism.

The Neutrality Acts

1935

Congress passed neutrality acts in order to combat Germany's and Italy's aggression in Europe. The Neutrality act of 1937which continued the ban on selling arms to nations at war.

Hemispheric Defense Zone

Sep 8, 1938

Due to the United States neutrality Britian struggled from Uboats sinking their ships. President Roosevelt declared that the western hemisphere was neutral and a defense zone. This allowed the Navy to patrol the water and warn the British of German submarines.

Start of WWII

Sep 1, 1939

World War II started with Germany invading Poland. Britain and France threatened to start war if German troops didn't move out of Poland. Germany refused and World War II commenced.

Destroyers For Bases

Sep 2, 1940

The United States traded previously used battleships to Britain. In return the United States would receive Naval and Air bases from Britain for a certain amount of time.

The Atlantic Charter

1941

The Atlantic Charter was between the United States and Britain. It opened free trade and freedom of the seas between the the two nations.

Lend-Lease Act

Mar 11, 1941

The Lend-Lease Act gave the government power to sell war supplies to countries that were needed to protect the United States. This allowed Roosevelt to give weapons to Britain.

Pearl Harbor

Dec 7, 1941

Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. Many of the ships were damaged and lives were lost. This brought the United States into the World War.
