    The Evacuation of Dunkirk was known as a miracle because of how fast Germany had been advancing in the war. Allied troops quickly evacuated the battle grounds with any boat possible. Hundreds of thousands of people's lives were saved due to the quick thinking of soldiers in Operation Dynamo off the coast of France. The evacuation ended on June 4, 1940.

    Dolittle Raid

    After the attack on Pearl Harbor, 16 American planes took off for Tokyo to pull off a bombing raid. At first, these counterattacks were seen as suicide missions, but their success lifted the spirits and hopes of Americans while proving the power of the US to Japan. The planes that did make it out unscathed landed in China, but many died in honor of fighting for the United States.

    Midway is known to be the battle that avenged Pearl Harbor. The United States surprise attacked Japanese air carries. This ability to catch them off guard made it easy for torpedo planes and bombers to demolish the carries along with all the supplies and planes on them. It was a battle on the pacific islands of Japan. The Japanese lost 4 carriers, a destroyer, and 250 planes. It ended on June 6, 1942 with Allied Victory.

    Germany invaded the major industrial city of Stalingrad in order to advance their power into Soviet Territory and gain oil fields. German troops held airstrikes on troops as well as civilians. However, German success was short lived when they were not equipped for the harsh winter and the Red Army was able to regain stability and counterattack. This battle was a major turning point because it severely weakened German forces and changed the pace of the war in Europe. It ended on February 2, 1943.

    Battle of the Bulge

    This Battle was Germany's last effort in the war. It was a surprise attack on the 101st airborne in Bastogne, Belgium. Though there was a harsh winter with little supplies, American troops prevailed and we able to get reinforcements and tanks to the battle. This sent Germans into a final retreat, and this battle officially ended on January 16, 1945. Even with a sneak attack, German casualties far outweighed the allies.

    As Russian troops swept through Germany after their final battle of the Bulge, the Red Army discovered the concentration camp of Auschwitz, one of the largest death camps known from the Nazi regime. They freed those of the Jews that were left behind whilst the rest were forced to walk a death march. This discovery uncovered the disgusting crimes of Hitler and how they committed mass genocide to Jews across Europe.

    Battle of Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima was an extremely bloody battle where Allied forces sent Marines to the "Sulfur Island". It was the most heavily protected and weaponized island in the world, with 20,000 Japanese waiting for the Allies. The navy and land forces had little impact on the island and 6000 marines died taking over it. However, only 200 Japanese fighters remained in the end, resulting in Allied Victory on March 26, 1945 along with a clear path for Gen. MacArthur to take the Philippines and Okinawa.
