    This event was the one thing that sparked the cause of World War 1. 19 year old Gavrilo Princip fired 2 shots during a parade. Princip did this out of complete nationalism. Or for the love of his country, he figured doing this would unlock the shackles binding his counties people.

    This was the first world war. Germany attacked France by first by invading neutral Belgium.The German juggernaut smashed its way into Belgium on August 5. At first it attacked Belgium's line of defensive fortresses. The Belgian army was forced to retreat and by the Germans had entered Brussels and were on their way to France.

    the newly invented airplane provided each side with a "bird's eye view". This was a huge factor in a war like this, It is giving the army a chance to see their base, formations and anything else they normally wouldn't be able to see. The very first airplane to be used in warfare was the AEG C.IV. This also meant new military jobs for pilots, and air combat.

    The same German submarine that sank this ship, had a;ready sunk 3 others between May 5th and May 7th. The name of this submarine was U -20. The Lusitania was the fastest boat at that time, but it wasn't going full speed due to fog. The captain of the German U-20 had stalked the Lusitania for an hour before firing a torpedo that would sink the ship and killing 1,198 people.

    In the early stages of the war the submarine was considered a quite useless weapon. It was ineffective of making blockades, the pipes were exposed, and it didn't have much room for prisoners. But Germany soon realized they didn't have to take prisoners, just sink the ship, and that's what they did. Germany dominated the game in the submarine part of the war, 1,030 of Britain ships were sunk in just 6 weeks.

    At this time in the war it was basically a stalemate. Trench warfare was the main cause of this, troops would just stare at each other from the lines of the opposite trenches. This was a pretty bloody battle with both sides combined of 552,000 causalities. The british had won this battle.

    It was one of the most anticipated sea battles in history. This conflict had been building up for awhile. It started when Kaiser Wilhelm challenged the naval dominance of the British fleet. The british came out the winner in this battle. It was a close battle but what made the difference was the dreadnought. A supersized powerful ship that was much faster than others.

    The plans and development of the tank started at the end of the summer in 1915.The idea was to combine the caterpillar tracks of an American tractor with an iron-clad machine.By spring of the following year the British had a working model ready to test. The British surprisingly failed even with the tanks, There was no effective strategies and a ton of mechanical errors.

    Mata Hari was one of Paris's most popular exotic dancers. After coming to the Netherlands, Mata was placed under surveillance for her German political and military beliefs.Brought in for questioning, the French reportedly had her to travel to neutral Spain in order to develop relationships with the German naval and army in Madrid and report any intelligence back to Paris. in 1917 she returned to Paris and was arrested for being a German spy and then sentenced to death.

    The conference began on January 18, 1919, with 21 nations in attendance.The representatives of Germany and the other defeated Central Powers were not allowed to sit at the table. The ones that were sitting at the table were known as "the big 4".Wilson pushed for inclusion of his Fourteen Points.France sought a peace treaty that would assure that her homeland would never again be invaded by Germany. Germany was hit hard by this conference. Having to give up military, pay for most of the damage.

    This was the first step for Warren and his military career. Here he went through basic training and learned the basics of what it takes to be a Marine. Warren was the first and only member of his family to be a Marine and he took much pride in that. He also says that he would fully support his son or daughters decision to enter the Marine Corps.
  • Went to Paris Island, NC for first boot camp.

    Went to Paris Island, NC for first boot camp.
    After completing basic training at the officer county program Warren fell in love with the Marines and knew this is what he wanted to do. He said Paris Island boot camp was just as hard if not harder than basic training. Warren met a lot of his buddies at this camp and was grouped with some of them. After 70 days of this he was shipped to camp Lejeune.

    Camp Lejune
    While Warren was here at camp Lejune he taught close combat. He said it was funny because he actually didn't know much at all about close combat. He spent most of his nights here reading tactics out of a hand book to teach his classes. One of his trainees joking called him a "real civilian in uniform". Warren didnt take much offense because he got along with most everyone and they thought he was funny.
  • Graduating Seminary

    Shortly after graduating from seminary, Warren immediately transferred to the Navy. Once he was there he became a Navy Chaplin and was in the Navy reserve. Warren never saw any action his whole career and he said he didn't mind that. He enjoyed helping and teaching people.
  • Warren retires

    Warren retires
    After a year and a half in the reserve Warren retired from the service. At the end of the interview he said how great both the Marine and Navy service was. He said he wouldn't have wanted to go down any other path. They taught him good morals, he served his country and met great people.
