Aftern the war Captain G. Impey wrote about trench foot. "About 200 men were evacuated for trench foot. Trench was reserved for men to go two at a time, at least once a day, and rub each others feet with grease." Some men had to get their feet/legs amputated.

One million woman joined the work force for the first time during war. Women worked in factories, shipyards, railroads, police officers, and trained engineers. After the war, women went back to their normal jobs or stopped working.

On Christmas Eve German and British troops sang Christmas carols. On Christmas morning, German soldiers called out "Merry Christmas" in different languages. They exchanged presents and sang songs together. Even a war could not destroy Christmas spirit.

At the beggining of the war, America stayed out of it. That is until the Lusitania came. German submarines sank the Lusitania, killing 1,195 poeple, including Americans. Even though it was two more years later that we went to war, the attack on the Lusitatnia marked a turning point on Amerian attitudes.

The US had joined Triple Entente Alliance in 1917. We had gotten involved beause Allies needed help. Also because of the Zimerman Telegram and the Lusitania.

On Februrary 5 of 1918 he enetered combat in Chemin des Dames. Stubby was the only dog to be promoted to sergeant. He is a Boston Bull Terrier. He helped find soldiers, also captured a German spy. First dog to ever give rank in USAF.

Roy Conroy Avery had wrote in his diary that Paris was brought down in flames. This occured on March 12, 1918, on a Tuesday. This happened from an air-raid during the night.

On April 8, 1918, Avery was commissioned on this date as the first Lieutenant in Sanitary Coprs.

"Terrific firing along front, no sleep, constant violent explosions" wrote Avery in his diary.At 2 a.m Germans fired 900 shells, some were wounded. He was tired and could not sleep.

On November 10th, 1918, Avery wrote "A bomb droppped a few yards from a house near by, an old lady was wounded. More bombs were dropped, it also killed four police men".

Avery had wrote "Armistice signed at 11 a.m. Great rejoicing bells rung, little town decked with flags" He later then got invited to French Officers club. He also wrote "A night never to be forgotten".

By the end of the War, the US spent 32 billion dollars. To fund the war effort, congress raised taxes, placed new taxes on corporate profits, and imposed an extra tax on profits of Armed factories. They also borrowed 20 billiion from Liberty Bonds and Victory Bonds.

On November 11, 1918 Germany surrendered. After that all other countries called a truce. Tearms and peace were then negotiated

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty with Germany. The Treaty of Versailles took place on June 28, 1919. In 1935, Hitler had began to defy the Treaty of Versailles that had ended the war. He also annouced that they would have a big military and violate the Treaty of Versailles.
