    Pope Pius XII was the pope during World War II. He kept the policy that the Vatican would remain neutral. There have been some stories that the Vatican hid some Jews in Vatican City to protect them from the Nazis. Pope Pius spoke out for the Jews and was called by the New York Times " the lonley voice in the silence and darkness in Europe."

    The Twinkie was invented by Alexander Dewar in Illinois in 1940. It was first made with srawberry and banana fillingsbut when those items were rationed during World War 2, he started filling the cakes with vannila cream. The Twinkies with vannila sld better than the ones with fruit and the modern Twinkie was created.

    Ernest Hemingway published the book "For Whom The Bell Tools" in October of 1940. It sold over a million copies within months and eventually won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1941, he was sent to China to work for a newspaper. He made it back before the United States declared war. From June 1941 to December 1944, Hemingway was in Europe. He was present at the D-Day landing and the liberation of Paris. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his bravery.

In 1942, he was dfarted into World War II and was in the Marines. While serving in the war, Williams played baseball on the Marines team.

    Siily Putty was created as a mistake by James Wright in 1943. When the government was trying to find a less expensive synthetic rubber, James Wright accidentrally made Silly Putty. He sent it to scientists alll around the world to see if they could find any practical uses for it. Peter Hodgeson bought some and started selling ti to people in one ounce eggs.

    Walter Frederick Morrison invented the fling disc in 1944 in California. He was in the war as a pilot and had studied aerodynamics. He and one of his friends created the disc because someone offered to buy a cake pan that he was tossing on the beach. He decided to make a flying disc that would work better than the cake pan. He came up with a platic, aerodynamic disc. After the war, the disc was renamed the frisbee.

    D-Day is the name given to the Normandy landings in Europe by the British, Canadians, Americans, and French troops. It is the largest amphibious invasion in world history and more than 160,000 men were involved.

    On April 16, 1945, Jackie Robinson tried out for the Boston Red Sox. At the time there were no black baseball players in the MLB. All black baseball players had to play in a special league called the Negro League. The Brooklyn Dodgers eventually signed him to play in the minor leagues on August 28 1945. They were the first team to have a black player on their roster.

He then made a metal box that produced a high density electromagnetic field and put food in it. The temperature of the foods rose rapidly. The company Raytheon, who Spencer was workin for, patented the invention.
