Pope Pius XII
Pope Pius XII was the pope during World War II. He kept the policy that the Vatican would remain neutral. There have been some stories that the Vatican hid some Jews in Vatican City to protect them from the Nazis. Pope Pius spoke out for the Jews and was called by the New York Times " the lonley voice in the silence and darkness in Europe." -
Twinkie was invented
The Twinkie was invented by Alexander Dewar in Illinois in 1940. It was first made with srawberry and banana fillingsbut when those items were rationed during World War 2, he started filling the cakes with vannila cream. The Twinkies with vannila sld better than the ones with fruit and the modern Twinkie was created. -
San Francisco World's Fair
The first San Francisco World's Fair was in 1940. It was to celebrate the newly built Golden Gate Bridge. -
Grandfather had Polio
My Grandpa had Polio in 1940. He was one of the first people to be cured of Polio by penicillin. -

He also helped the United States make the first atomic bomb out of fear that the Germans would make it first. He was a paifist and opposed war. Einstein often said that hlping the United States make the atomic bomb was one of the greatest mistakes that he made in his life. -

Leon Trotsky was the communist leader in the Soviet Union. He was also the commander of the Red Army. -

The London Blitz happened when Germany dropped bombs on the United Kingdomafter the British bombed Berlin. Over 37 weeks, London was bombed 71 times by the Germans. -
Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway published the book "For Whom The Bell Tools" in October of 1940. It sold over a million copies within months and eventually won a Pulitzer Prize. In 1941, he was sent to China to work for a newspaper. He made it back before the United States declared war. From June 1941 to December 1944, Hemingway was in Europe. He was present at the D-Day landing and the liberation of Paris. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his bravery. -
Deodorant was invented
The modern deodorant was created by Jules Montenier. It was created to address the problem of the excessive acidity of aluminum choride and its excessive irritation of the skin. -

My Great Great Uncle Eddie was a colonel in World War II. He was stationed in Europe for most of his time in the war. He worked with General Eisenhower while in Europe. He came back to the United States at the end of the War and worked for Eisenhower in Washington D.C. -

In May 1941, Frank Sinatra was the number one rated singer in Billboard Magazine. He did not serve in World War II but was known for going over-seas to perform for and raise the morale of the soldiers. -
Ted Wiliams
Ted Williams is the only major leagur baseball player to ever win the Triple Crown twice. He was selected into the All-Star game 19 times and is one of the only players ever to hit above .400. In 1942, he was dfarted into World War II and was in the Marines. While serving in the war, Williams played baseball on the Marines team. -

The "Final Solution" was the Nazis plan to annihilate the Jews, resulting in the Holocaust. The plan went into full effect in the Wannsee Conference in 1942. -
Penicillin first used as medicine
Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1942 in London. It was first used for medical purposes on MArch 14, 1942 when it was used to save a dying persons's life. Penicillin is used to treat bacterial infections, syphillis, and polio. -

Mahatma Gandhi was arrested by the British on August 9, 1942. During the war, Gandhi suggested that India should offer "non-violent moral support" to the British. Gandhi always supported staying out of violent conflicts but helping with the resolution of the war. -

Enrico Fermi split an atom in 1942. He also worked on the Manhattan Project with Albert Einstein to make the atomic bomb. -
Bob Hope
Bob Hope was an actor, comedian, singer, dancer, athlete, and entertainer. He hosted the Acadamy Awards fourteen times from 1941 to 1988. Hope appeared in 60 movies during his carrer. Bob Hope was also a part of the USO(United Service Organization) and travled around the country and to Europe to entertaian the soldiers in World War II -
Silly Putty was invented
Siily Putty was created as a mistake by James Wright in 1943. When the government was trying to find a less expensive synthetic rubber, James Wright accidentrally made Silly Putty. He sent it to scientists alll around the world to see if they could find any practical uses for it. Peter Hodgeson bought some and started selling ti to people in one ounce eggs. -
Frisbee was invented
Walter Frederick Morrison invented the fling disc in 1944 in California. He was in the war as a pilot and had studied aerodynamics. He and one of his friends created the disc because someone offered to buy a cake pan that he was tossing on the beach. He decided to make a flying disc that would work better than the cake pan. He came up with a platic, aerodynamic disc. After the war, the disc was renamed the frisbee. -
D-Day
D-Day is the name given to the Normandy landings in Europe by the British, Canadians, Americans, and French troops. It is the largest amphibious invasion in world history and more than 160,000 men were involved. -

President Roosevelt was elected to his fourth term in 1944. It is the only time a President of the United States has ever been elected to four terms. -
Jackie Robinson
On April 16, 1945, Jackie Robinson tried out for the Boston Red Sox. At the time there were no black baseball players in the MLB. All black baseball players had to play in a special league called the Negro League. The Brooklyn Dodgers eventually signed him to play in the minor leagues on August 28 1945. They were the first team to have a black player on their roster. -
Hitler Commits Suicide
Hitler commited suicide right before the Americans and Soviets were about to take over Germany. He and his wife both died at the same time. Hitler commited suicide because he did not want to see Germany taken by the Soviets and he did not want to be captured by them. -
Germany surrenders
Germany surrendred on May 7, 1945. Germany surrendred when the Soviets, Americans, and British took control of Berlin. The German leaders realized all was lost and surrendred. -

Japan surrenders
The surrender of Japan after the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima ended World War II. After the atomic bomb was dropped and the Soviet Union had also declared war on Japan, the Japanese announced that they were surrendering. -
Microwave Oven invented
The first microwavewas created by Percy Spencer. He was working on a radar set when he noticed that the radar had melted his chocolat bar. He then made a metal box that produced a high density electromagnetic field and put food in it. The temperature of the foods rose rapidly. The company Raytheon, who Spencer was workin for, patented the invention. -
Jackie Robinson First Black Pro Sports Player
Jackie Robinson became the first black player when he signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers for $600 a month.
