  • Assassinatian of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Members of the Serbian group called the Black Hand assassinate Archduke of Austria. Germany was allies with Austria so when Austria declared war on Serbia, so did Germany.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania: German U-Boat fired on the Lusitania, 128 Americans killed in the attack
  • German U Boat firing on the French ship, Sussex

    French passenger ship torpedoed in the English Channel. Led to Sussex pledge, Germany promused not to attack cargo or passerger ships as long as brits followed international law.
  • 1916 presidential election

    Wilson seeks his second term as president. Wilson campaigns on the slogan "he kept us out of war".
  • Zimmerman telegram

    Germany sent tellegram to Mexico. This offered mexico U.S. territory if they won the war
  • Congress declares war on Germany

    Germany resumed USW. Wilson broke diplomatic relations with Germany and declared war. However the american troops were ill prepared for war.
  • Selective Service Act

    Required all men ages 21-30 to register with draft boards. More than 24 million registered. 3 million were drafted. Had over one million volunteers.
  • Espionage act

    A United States federal law passed on June 15, 1917, shortly after the U.S. entry into World War I.It prohibited any attempt to interfere with military operations, to support U.S. enemies during wartime, to promote insubordination in the military, or to interfere with military recruitment.
  • Signing of seperate peace between Germany and Russia

    In December 1917, Germany agreed to an armistice and peace talks with Russia, and Lenin sent Leon Trotsky to Brest-Litovsk in Belarus to negotiate a treaty.
  • United States troops see action

    In the spring of 1918 the American Expeditionary Force finally sees war action. This lasted for less than two years.

    An Act of the United States Congress that extended the Espionage Act of 1917 to cover a broader range of offenses
  • AEF Breaks German Lines

    The United States troops broke German lines. This led to the armistist or "cease fire" ten days later.
  • Armistice declared between Russia and Germany

    Germany and Russia came to an aggrement in their negotiations and an armistice was delcared.
  • Schenck Vs. U.S

    Charles Schenck was prosecuted for distribution anti-draft leaflets. He claimed that the draft was aginst the 13th amendment. He was convicted of violation the Espionage Act
  • Signing of Treaty of Versailles (ending world war 1)

    The peace treaty that ended the first great war. It took six months of negotiations after the armistice to fully end the war.
