    The idea for the attacks came from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who first presented it to Osama bin Laden in 1996. In late 1999, a group of men from Hamburg, Germany arrived in Afghanistan, including Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, Ziad Jarrah, and Ramzi bin al-Shibh. These men went to flight school and obtained their pilot's licenses.

    The first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center occurred on February 26, 1993, at 12:17 p.m. A Ryder truck filled with 1500 pounds of explosives was planted in the underground garage of the North Tower. The bomb went off, killing six and injuring over 1000 people. The truck was not successful in taking town the tower.

    Planned by Islamist terrorists, the World Trade Center was successfully destroyed because two stolen Boeing 776 airplanes crashed into the towers. The attack killed 2,192 people. By 10:28am, both of the towers had collapsed and left nothing but rubble.The surrounding buildings were severely damaged and collapsed with the tower.

    Over the following years, plans were created for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center.1 WTC opened on November 3, 2014, 4 WTC opened on November 13, 2013 and 3 WTC is under construction and expected to open in 2017.

    The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,996 people and the injuries of 6,000+ others. Along with the 110-floor Twin Towers, numerous other buildings at the World Trade Center site were destroyed or badly damaged, including WTC buildings 3 through 7 and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The damage resulted in over 10 billion dollars worth of damage.

    Early on the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 hijackers took control of four commercial airliners. Large planes with long flights were selected for hijacking because they would be heavily fueled.

    The aftermath of the 9/11 attack resulted in immediate responses to the event, including domestic reactions, hate crimes, Muslim responses to the event, international responses to the attack, and military responses to the events. An extensive compensation program was quickly established by Congress in the aftermath to compensate the victims and families of victims of the 9/11 attack as well.
