  • Mexican War of Independence

     Mexican War of Independence
    was an armed conflict which ended the rule of Spain in the territory of New Spain
    influenced by the Enlightenment and other revolutionary leaders
    led by Miguel Hidalgo and Jose Morelos
    I chose this event because I felt it was important to highlight how Mexico gained its independence
    Cause: political and social uprisings and unrest in Mexico
    Effect: Mexico became a free nation.
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine
    was a U.S. foreign policy agreement created by U.S. president James Monroe
    stated that attempts to colonize by Europeon countries would be considered an act of aggression, and would force the U.S. to act against that
    also stated that the New and Old worlds would remain as seperate spheres of influence
    I chose this event because it is one of the most poignant foreign policy aggreements the U.S. has ever made.
    Cause: recently independent Latin American countries
    Effect: The Roosevelt Corollary
  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavril Princip, who was a Bosnian revolutionary
    Princip belonged to the Black Hand, a Serbian nationalist
    I chose this event because it is one of the biggest events in history, and one that sparked the first World War
    Cause: political tensions and nationalist feelings in Europe
    Effect: The spark that began World War I
  • Panama Canal Built

    Panama Canal Built
    Canal built by the US to expand trade and commerce interests in the Pacific Ocean
    commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt
    completed in august of 1914
    I chose this event because it shifted the way the U.S. was viewed by Latin American countries and made the US seem like an aggressive Imperial power
    Cause: a desire to expand United States influence to the west
    Effect: expanded trade but changed other countries' perception of America

    The Russian Revolution
    was a s series of revolutions in Russia that caused Russia to withdraw from World War I
    led to the rise of the Soviet Union'
    I chose this event because it forever altered Russia's position in the world, and had a huge impact on World War I
    Cause: Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne
    Effect: created the Soviet Union
  • The Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles
    treaty signed at the Paris Peace conference which ended World War I
    was very controversial and only went so far as to end the actual fighting
    punished Germany heavily
    I chose this event because it connects to both the Second and First World Wars.
    Cause: a call for the end of fighting of World War I
    Effect: essentially created the political aggression necessary to start World War II

    Irish War of Independence
    war fought between the Irish Republican Army and British forces in Ireland
    fought for two years
    Ireland wanted to be a free state and gain independence for Britain
    I chose this event because it had a huge imapct on both Britain and Ireland
    Cause: Irish Republican party win in the 1918 election
    Effect: Ireland became a free nation

    Mussolini's Rise to Power
    began the reign of fascism in Italy
    put an emphasis on militarism and aggressive nationalism
    beieved that private property and enterprise should be regulated by the government, but did not endorse socialism
    totalitarian dictatorship
    I chose this event because it completely changed the way Italy was viewed in the world and Italy in itself.
    Cause: The March on Rome
    Effect: Italy became a fascist state

    Turkish War of Independence
    fought between the Turkish Nationalists and Great Britain, France, Armenia and Italy
    Turkey wanted independence for the Allied powers who owned that territory
    I chose this event because it contributed to the tensions between nations leading up to World War II
    Cause: Turkey wanted to be a free nation
    Effect: Heightened tensions contributing to the sark of World War II

    The Great Depression
    worldwide economic downturn over the lat 1920s- 1930s
    especially prevelant in the U.S.
    the poor were the most affected
    I chose this event because it was so influential on American life and the lives of the Europeans
    Cause: Stock Market Crash in the U.S.
    Effect: affects the world politcally, economically and even psychologically as everything had changed
  • Hitler's Rise to Power

    Hitler's Rise to Power
    Hitler became chancellor of Germany and shifted Germany's political system
    created a complete totalitarian dicatorship
    ruled using scare tacitcs and false propaganda to brainwash the people of Germany
    genocide of the Jewish people
    I chose this event because of its enormous impact on the entire world and World War II.
    Cause: elected leader of the Nazi party
    Effect: totalitarian rule, contributed to the beginning of World War II, genocide of millions of people

    Stalin's Rise to Power
    new leader of the Soviet Union right after it became a communist state
    his rule was harsh and unjust'
    considered a totalitarian dictatorship
    believed in "socialism in one country"
    I chose this event because Stalin's rise to power was the beginning of a new era of harsh rules and a tense climate in Europe.
    Cause: death of Lenin in 1921
    Effect: altered the way the Soviet Union and had a huge impact on World War II

    Pearl Harbor
    Japanese bombing of the naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii
    was considered an act of terrorism
    forced America's entry into World War II
    had a profound effect on the american people
    I chose this event because of the magnitude of the impact on America, even today
    Cause: an attempt on Japan's part to protect its advance itno Malaya and the Dutch East Indies
    Effect: America officially entered World War II.

    The Yalta Conference
    a meeting between the heads of government in the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Sates to discuss postwar reparations and political matters ending World War II
    intended to focus on the restablishment of war torn nations
    I chose this event because it was influential in ensuring that the nations could recover from the war
    Cause: World War II coming to an end
    Effect: manage to work on reorganizing Europe

    The End of the Holocaust
    the end of the genocide of over 6 million Jews over an 11 year period
    started by German leader Adolf Hitler
    Hitler wanted the Aryan race to be in the only one in existence
    marked the end of a brutal time of fear for many minorities across Eurpoe
    I chose this event because of how incredibly horrific it was, and how impactful it was on everyone in the world at the time of World War II and even today
    Cause: Hitler wanted to eliminate the Jews
    Effect: Tore apart the Jewish communtiy
  • Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan

    Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan
    US bombings of Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    the first and only time the atomic bomb has ever been used
    devastatesd both cities and murdered thousands of people
    offiicially marked the end of World War II, the Allied forces won
    I chose thsi evenet because it is both the first and last times in history that the atomic bomb was used
    Cause: America wanted revenge on Japan for Pearl Harbor and wanted to end the war.
    Effect: devastated Japan but called for the end of the war
