    Hurricane Katrina devastates the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coastlines killing at least 1,836 people and causing 81 billion dollars in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. When Katrina made landfall, it had a Category 3 rating and winds of 100 to 140 miles per hour. Hurricane Katrina stretched across 400 miles.

    Osama Bin Laden was the head leader of al-Qaeda. He was killed in Pakistan by the U.S. Navy Seals. In a daring raid 120 miles inside Pakistan, a team of Navy Seals flew from Afghanistan to Bin Laden’s hiding place in the dead of night.

    A gunman kills 26, including 20 children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and 6 adult staff members. Before opening fire at Sandy Hook, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newton home.
