The NACW (National Association of Colored Women) was founded by merging two earlier organizations. They managed nurseries, reading rooms, and kindergartens.
The suffragits leaders tried to convince state legislatures to grant the women the right to vote and they did. -
Susan B. Anthony and other women tested the question, which was weren't women citizens too?, by attempting to vote at least 150 times in ten states and the District of Columbia.

The supreme court said that women were indeed citizens-but then denied that citizenship automatically confferred the right to vote

Susan B. Anthony and Cady Staton founded the NWSA (National Women Suffrage Association), which later became the NAWSA (National American Women Suffrage Association). Other important women were Lucy Ston and Julia Ward Howe

She was the president of the NAWSA from 1900 to 1904 and resumed in 1915. When she returned she focused on five tactics:
1.) Painstaking organization
2.) Close tieds between local, state, and national workers
3.) Establish a wide base of support
4.) Cautious lobbying
5.) Gracious, ladylike behavior -
146 workers mostly young women died in a fire due to Dangerous conditions. They also had low wages and long hours which led many female industrial workers to push for reforms.

People wanted more so Lucy Burns and Alice Paul formed their own more radical organization, The Congressional Union, and its successor, the National Women's Party. They pressured the federal government to pass a suffrage amendment and by 1917 Paul had organized her followers to mount a round-the-clock picket line around the white house.

In 1919 conngress passed an amendment that gave women the right to vote.
