Domenikos Theotokopoulos was born in Hania, Crete.
At that time Crete belonged to the Republic fo Venice. When he grew up he studied Byzantine icon painting. -
He moved to Venice where he continued his studies in painting.

He moved to Rome, the capital of Italy, in 1570 where he lived and worked until 1577.

He moved to Spain in Toledo, a city near Madrid (the capital city), where he built his career and became very famous for his artistic abilities as a painter! He stayed in Toledo for the rest of his life until his death.

He died at the age of 73.
