    When the Mexican-American war ended, America recieved new territories. There was a probem manily because non one knew if it would be admited as a free or slave state. Congress then passed the Compromsie of 1850. It made California free and also allowed the poeple to pick if Utah and New Mexico would be a free or slavery state.

  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850. This act forced any federal official who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a fine. If you knew where a slave was located, you had to have reported to the southern officals. This also This was the most controversial part of the Compromise of 1850 and caused many abolitionists to increase their efforts against slavery. This act increased the Underground Railroad activity as fleeing slaves made their way to Canada.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin Release
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Stowe was an abolitionist who wrote this book to show the evils of slavery. This book, which was a best seller at the time, had a huge impact on the way that northerners viewed slavery. It helped the cause of abolition. Abraham Lincoln also recognized that this bok was one of the events that led to the outbreak of the Civil War.

    Bleeding Kansas
    In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed. It allowed the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide for themselves by using popular sovereignty. It would allow the people who live on territory to decide if it would be a free or slave state. By 1856, Kansas had become a big placec for violence as pro- and anti-slavery forces fought over the state's future.

    This is when Charles Sumner was attacked by Democratic Preston Brooks. He beat him up on the floor of the Senate Chamber.

    Dred Scot Decision
    Dred Scot was a slave. He was owned by a Peter Blow. They said that since he was african, he did not have the right to sue in a federal court and that technically he was not a citizen of America. What happened was that he was taken to a territory where there was not slavery so he thought that since he was in a free state, he was free. But unfortunately he lost.

    John Brown Raided Harper's Ferry
    John Brown was a radical abolitionist who had been involved in anti-slavery violence in Kansas. John Brown was hanged eventually. there were different portraits of him that shows different things about him. One shows him as a bad guy while one shows him as this poor guy.

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    This is when the Federal Army was held captive by the confederates. Abraham Lincoln sent in a ship filled with food to help keep them alive. The ship never had any guns or ammo inside. the Confederates blown up the Fort. No one survived.
