What caused the Revolutionary War

  • French & Indian War

    The war provided Great Britain enormous territorial gains in North America, but disputes over subsequent frontier police & paying the war's expenses led to the colonial discontent, & ultimately to the American Revolution.
  • Boston Massacre

    Tensions began to grow, and in Boston in March, 1770 a patriot mob attacked a British loyalist, who fired a gun killing Crispus Attucks. In the ensuing days brawls between colonists and British soldiers eventually culminated in the Boston Massacre. In which a turning point in the beginnings of the American Revolution.
  • Boston Tea Party

    It was a key-event for the Revolutionary War. With this act, the colonists started the violent part of the revolution. It was the first try of colonists to rebel with violence against their own government. Then the government passed taxes on lead, paint, paper & tea. Samuel Adams organized & carried a group of Patriots led by Samuel known as the Sons of Liberty.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    In 1774 it took the momentous step of declaring America's independence from Britain. 5 years later the congress ratified the 1st national constitution, the Articles of Confederation, under which the country would be governed until 1789, when it was replaced by the current US Constitution. Peyton Randolph of VA was named president of the 1st Continental Congress.
  • Battle of Lexington & Concord

    It signaled the start of the American Revolutionary War. The British Army set out from Boston to capture rebel leaders Samuel Adams & John Hancock in Lexington as well as to destroy the Americans store of weapons & ammunition in Concord.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    The British had won the so-called Battle of Bunker Hill, & Breed's Hill & the Charles-town peninsula fell firmly under British control. Additionally, the high price of victory at the at the Battle of Bunker Hill made the British realize that the war with the colonies would be long, tough and costly.
  • The Declaration of Independence

    Thomas Jefferson did most of the writing. The 13 colonies wanted to be "free and independent states". Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke gave the founders many of the ideas in the DOI. "People are all equal" Because "People are all born with rights" & "Those rights included life and property". "Rights come directly from God, not from governments" Rights are freedoms that belong to every human being.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    It was a turning point in the American Revolution. It gave the Patriots a major morale boost & persuaded the French, Spanish and Dutch to join their cause against a mutual rival.
  • Surrender at Yorktown

    Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown effectively ended the Revolutionary War. Lacking the financial resources to raise a new army, the British government appealed to the Americans for peace.
  • The Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris was signed by U.S. & British Representatives on Sep 3, 1783, ending the War of the American Revolution. Based on a 1782 preliminary treaty, the agreement recognized U.S. independence and granted the U.S. significant western territory.
