Western influence on Japan

  • US makes Japan to open up to foreign influence

    The US came to Japan and opened up its self-imposed isolation towards foreign influence that had went on for over 200 years.
  • Shogun Military Rule ends (1868) --- Country starts to gain trading dominance and rapid industrialisation.

    End of the many centuries of rule by the Shogun Military Castle, the Empire of Japan is declared, the country then enters a rapid period of industrialisation and trading dominance over Asia

    Japan joins World War I on the side of Britain, gaining some Pacific islands from Germany at the end of the war.

    August-October Japan tries to establish a buffer zone, but is forced out.

    Japan tries to establish buffer zone (a neutral area to separate
    hostile forces/nations) against Bolshevik regime in Russia's Pacific provinces and is pushed out by British and US diplomatic pressure and domestic opposition.
  • Late 1920's- Extreme nationalism, rejection against "Western influence".

    Extreme nationalism begins to take hold in Japan as world economic depression hits. The emphasis is on a preservation of traditional Japanese values, and a rejection of "Western" influence.
  • 1939- Second world war in Europe starts, Japan occupies French Indo-China

    Start of Second World War in Europe. With the fall of France in 1940, Japan moves to occupy French Indo-China.
  • US declares war after surprise attack.

    Japan launches a surprise attack on US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. US and main allies declare war on Japan.
  • The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    US planes drop two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August. Emperor Hirohito surrenders. Japan placed under US military government.
