The outbreak was traced back to a 2-year-old child infected in Guinea in December 2013, three months before the outbreak was declared. At the time of this writing, according to the World Health Organization, worldwide a total of 17,145 cases of ebola have been reported in five affected countries including Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and the United States.
