War Timeline

  • French Indian War

    French Indian War
    The main cause of this war was fighting over land (Causes). The war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. It provided Great Britain with a lot of territorial gains in North America (Milestones).
  • American Revolution

    American Revolution
    The war was between the colonies in North America and Great Britain. The war started because of a disagreement over the way Great Britain was treating the colonies and how the colonies felt they should be treated. The war ended in 1783 when a British General surrendered to the colonists (What Caused the American Revolution).
  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    We went to war in June of 1812 because we had disagreements about Britain helping the Indians too much against the US (Hewitt, Lawson 261). It ended in 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent. The US didn’t lose or gain any land. The Indians were left with no allies in the battle for the frontier (Hewitt, Lawson 263).
  • Mexican American War

    Mexican American War
    A fight over land between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande River caused the war to break out (Hewitt, Lawson 315). It ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 and the US giving $15 million to Mexico in return for Texas, California and New Mexico territories (Hewitt, Lawson 316).
  • US Civil War

    US Civil War
    The war started in 1861 because the south seceded from the union. At Fort Sumter, South Carolina, there were union soldiers who needed supplies. Lincoln sent ships to bring the supplies. The Confederacy had to choose between allowing foreign ships into their territory, or starting the war. The Confederacy started the war by opening fire on Fort Sumter (Hewitt, Lawson 395)
  • US Civil War

    US Civil War
    Slavery was made illegal as of the 13th amendment (Hewitt, Lawson 415). The Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Lincoln in 1863 which freed slaves that were in the rebellion states (Hewitt, Lawson 403). General Lee of the Confederacy surrendered on April 9th, 1865. President Lincoln was assassinated 5 days later (Hewitt, Lawson 416).
  • Spanish American War

    Spanish American War
    Cubans were fighting for independence. The US stepped in to help fight against Spain, and it ended on December 10th, 1898 (Hewitt, Lawson 628). A condition of the Treaty of Paris was that Cuba couldn’t sign a treaty with any other country without US agreement (Hewitt, Lawson 628).
  • World War 1

    World War 1
    The war started in 1914; the US didn’t enter until 1917 (History.com Staff). The fighting was between the Central Powers and the Allies. The war started when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria. The US stayed out of the war for 3 years but then joined the Allies because of the ties we had. In 1918 Germany surrendered and the war ended. The final treaty was signed in 1919 at the Palace of Versailles (Hewitt, Lawson 634-41).
