    Wallace Stevens was born in Reading,Pennsylvania on october 2, 1879. He was born to a weathy family. His father being a Country lawyer ( he would also be a lawyer in the future) . His mother was a teacher in Reading.

  • Christain School

    Wallace and his family belonged to the Dutch Church. The church wanted all of the children to start school there at a certan,so they waited till Wallace was of age . When he was old enough he was enrolled. He stayed at the school till he was 12.
  • Pulic School

    At age 12 Wallace was enrolled in an public school. At the school he learned Greek and Latin. In high school he became a highscoring student.

    Wallace started going to Harvard in 1897 to 1900. Encouraged by his father, he became interested in the literary aspects of Harvard life.By the end of his 3rd year, he had won all the schools awards for his writing. He did not graduate from there though.
  • Wallace becomes a Reporter

    Wallace became a reporter right after he left Harvord.He was a reporter for New Your Times newspaper. He was 21 when he started the job. Back in Harvard and high school when he had won all the schools writing awards , he stuck with his writing . Now he did the same thing ,.. staying with his gift.

    Wallace left Harvard in 1900 so he could be a lawyer just like his dad was. He attend New York Law School for 4 years . He had left his poet life not knowing he would soon come back to it and become famous.

  • Meeting Elsie

    After leaving to College Wallace meet his future wife Elsie. Elsie was also from Reading.He meet her in 1903 , the same year he graduated.She had worked as a miller and saleswoman.
  • Becoming a lawyer and Vice Presedent

    Wallace was soon after college looking for a job. Soon after he was hired as a bonding lawyer for an insurance firm in 1908. In 1914 he became the Vice Presedent of the New York Office of the Equitable Surety Company ,Witch is in St. Missouri. He kept the job for years , but that didnt mean he would always have it.

    Although Wallaces parents did not appove of Elsie, they got married. Wallaces parnets did not like her because she was 3rd class. At first Elsie and Wallace fought but they stayed married.Wallace was 30 when he got married.
  • Elsie gets her profile on a dime

    The stevens had just moved in to there apartment in 1913. The man that they had rented from was a sculptor. The man saw Elsies stunning profile. Her profile ended up on a 1916-1945 Mercury dime.
  • the series "pharses"

    His first major published poems were from a sequence titled "Phases." In the November 1914 edition of Poetry Magazing was written. Wallace was 35 when he wrote it.. Even though he did not graduate from Harvard , the school exceped.
  • Quiting one job and starting a next

    In 1916 , when he quit , he left to Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company . He left New York City and moved to Hartford , Connecticut , where he would live the rest of his life.By 1934, he had been named vice-president of the company. This was the final job he would stick with.
  • Harmonium ( the first book)

    Harmonium was Wallaces first book. After the book was printed and ready for sall , it sold under 100 copies. He had it reissued in 1931 and in 1947. 3 decades later he called his other collected books ' the whole of Harmonium ' .

    In the year 1924 Holly was born . Holly was the Stevens first child and only child that the couple would have , Wallace was 45 when Holly was born. Holly later edited her fathers unfinished poems after his death.

    Wallace Stevens begain to write poems in 1930. He arranged for them to be printed in editions. He had worte 6 poems between the 1930s and 1940s. these 6 were 'Ideas of Order' (1935), 'Owl’s Clover' (1937) ,'The Man With the Blue Guitar' (1937) ,and' Parts of a World '(1942), 'Notes toward a Supreme Fiction' (1942)and' Esthetique du Mal' .
  • Still writing

    At age 60 most poets stop writing and look ack on the past,but not Wallace. He continued to write his whole life . He wrote many poems and had many of them put in a seres. Some of his next poems were '' an ordinary evening in new haven'' and " notes toward a supreme fiction.
  • National Book Award

    Wallce won the National Book Award... twice. One time in 1950 and the other in 1954. He sepent 4 decades writing all his poems in his spare time between his work and time with his family. Wallace was in his 70s when he recevied this award.
  • Pulitzer Award

    Wallace recvied the pulitzer reward.A Pulitzer Award is an award for literature, in this case. He had gotten the award for '' Harmonium". Wallace had gotten a differant award for this same poem.
  • Wallace died

    wallace Stevens died in Harford, Connecticut. He died of stomach Cancer at age 73. He died in the St. Francis hospital in october. Wallace is buried in Ceder Hill Cemetary.
