    In 1928, Vince went through a 6 year secondary program to become a Catholic priest. He played baseball and basketball, but was hindered because of athleticism and eye sight. He also played football off campus and eventually stopped the 6 year program and went to St. Francis Prep.

    Lombardi accepts scholarship for football at Fordham University to play for coach Jim Crowley. Became a starter at tackle, and by senior year was a starter at guard, until he was severly injured and was out for the last games.
  • Early Career

    This day, he graduated form Fordham University. Because the Great Depression, he had little choices for jobs. Lombardi tried semi-pro football and a debt collector, which failed quickly. With strong parental support, he enrolled in law school which he soon quit as well.

    Early, he coached freshman and varsity teams for football and basketball at Fordham. Then coached at U.S. Military Academy and went on to be an assistant coach for the New York Giants.

    On this day, after a horrible season with a record of 1-10-1, Vince Lombardi accepted the new job offer as the head coach for the Green Bay Packers. He demanded and expected absolute dedication and effort from his players. It was an immediate improvement to 7-5. He was named the rookie coach of the year.

    After nearly 9 years with the Packers, Lombardi stepped down, and returned to coaching in 1969. This time for the Redskins, he led them to 7-5-2 record. This was his first and last season with Washington, afterwards retiring from coaching.

    As early as 1967, Vince had digestive tract problems and refused to see any doctors. By 1970 he was admitted to Gerogetown University Hospital, and had tests run on him. They discovered a malignant cancer within his colon area. He passed away at 7:12am on September 3, 1970.

    After his death, Vince was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame and the NFL Hall of Fame. He earned many awards throughout his career, such as NFL coach of the year. He won 2 Superbowls, 6 NFL Championships and finshed his career with a total record of 96-34-6. He even had the current Superbowl trophy named after, being the Lomardi Trophy.
