  • Media Interacts with Vietnam

    The first US combat troops in Vietnam in the spring of 1965, this is when 66% of Americans approved of US support in South Vietnam. As the war progressed public support became to drastically declined. Then, the media began stating the government was lying. General William Westmoreland stated, "enemy's hopes are bankrupt... the end begins to come into view." Millions of Americans still saw American casualties on TV as Vietnam was the first televised war.

    The deal granted Johnson more power to conduct the war beginning to seek greater involvement. So in February 1965 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held hearings to be informed about Vietnam.
  • Teach-ins Begin

    Members of Michigan University joined together in a teach-in in March 1965. They discussed issues surrounding Vietnam and told reasons why the disapproved of war. In May 1965 122 colleges held National teach-ins by radio and there were over 100,000 antiwar demonstrators.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive

    On a Vietnamese holiday the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese launched a massive surprise attack on US. They mostly attacked American bases and major South Vietnam cities. One month of fighting made America and South Vietnam to repelled enemy troops, causing heavy loses for them.
  • Johnson's Announcement

    In 1968 President Johnson came out with an announcement that shocked the world. He declared he was dropping out of the presidential election of 1968. On television he said, "I have concluded that I should not permit the presidency to become involved in the partisan divisions that are developing in this political year. Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President."
  • MLK Assassination

    While the war was going on, Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting a bigger fight at home. MLK was one of the most influential people in the Civil Rights Movement. Sadly though he was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis.
  • Robert "Bobby" Kennedy's Assassination

    Brother of JFK was leading democratic nominee for presidential election of 1968. One of four major assassinations in 5 years; John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. Two months after MLK's assassination Robert Kennedy was assassinated. He was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan, an Arabian nationalist.
  • Democratic National Convention in Chicago

    Democratic National Convention in Chicago

    Violence sickened the country when violent protesters were in Chicago. As these protesters were acting violently police at Democratic Convention. This was one cause of Nixon being elected as president. In a nearby park demonstrators taunted the police and the police acted violating, this was all aired on national television.
  • Nixon wins election

    Richard Nixon the republican candidate because Johnson denied to run again for president. He told the American people he was running for the "quiet majority", people who weren't having violent protests.
  • 26th Amendment

    26th Amendment

    Passed on March 23, 1971, ratified July 1st, granted American citizens 18 years or older to vote.
