    Geneva Accords
    This resolution ended the French Indochina war and divided Vietnam up at the 17th parallel. Ho Chi Minh, a communist, controlled the North while Ngo Diem, pro west, led the South.

    U.S. supported coup of Diem
    Diem was assassinated against Kennedy's wishes. This led Kennedy to announce his plan to withdraw but unfortunately he was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963.

    American soldiers brutally killed women, children and old men in the village of My Lai. More than 500 people were slaughtered and women were raped and mutilated before being killed.

    Vietnamization
    Nixon introduced this plan as a way to gradually withdraw troops and and turn the fighting over to the Vietnam Army. As South Vietnam became stronger, more troops were withdrawn and brought back to U.S.

    Students at Kent State University were protesting President Nixon's decision to temporarily invade Cambodia when things got out of hand. Buildings were burned and destroyed, 4 students were killed, and several were injured.
