    Diem, a Catholic, banned the raditional religious flaga for Buddha's birthday. Buddhists went to the streets in an outrage, 9 were killed, and 14 were injured. A Buddhist monk went to the streets and simply set himself on fire--> stark symbol of the oppositing to Diem.
