Vietnam Divides the Nation

  • Anti War movement emerges

    As the war progesses and is more exposed to the media, The American Citizens begin to contradict government reports. A credibility gap began to form, which were people beginning to have a hard time believing what the Johnson administration said about the war.

    As the war went on, American Citizens grew a great distrust for the United States Government. The citizens believed the Government was lying and/or not telling the full truth about what was going on in Vietnam. People slowly started losing faith in why the War should continue on.

    Anger at the draft

    Countless amounts of angry students and people become progressively more angry about the draft. The SDS organized a march at Washington D.C. that attracted more than 20,000 people. Not only that, but many African American leaders, such as MLK, were angered because 10 percent of the US troops were black and 20 percent of the death rates were made up of African Americans.

    Hawks and Doves

    In general, most of the two American citizen opinions consisted of hawks and doves. Doves wanted the US to leave the war, and Hawks wanted the US to stay and fight.
  • Teach-ins

    Teach-ins

    Multiple Universities used Teach-ins to protest against the Vietnam war. Teach-ins were extended meetings on college campuses used for lectures, debates, and discussions to raise awareness about the war.
  • Johnson Leaves the race

    With losing lots of American support from the American war, the democratic party had many tricks of their sleeves to win the next presidential election. Johnson decided to leave the running for president to be reelected. Many citizens predicted if he did run, he would have lost in a landslide.

    The Tet offensive was a surprise attack, on Tet, the Vietnamese new year. The North Vietnamese attacked American airbases in south Vietnam. This discouraged the American citizens as quoted, "The American people should getting ready to accept, if they haven’t already, the prospect that the whole Vietnam effort may be doomed,”

    Season of Violence

    The 1960s was a very violent and crazy time. In 1968, MLK got assasinated on April 4th, this caused the black community to go into a great sadness. Not only that, but another guy who supported Civil Rights was Robert Kennedy who got assasinated two months later.

    Even though the nation swayed more towards the democratic party, Nixon changed things up. Nixon told the nation that Democrats were the reason there was so much violence and chaos in the past few years. Such as the death of MLK and Kennedy, Nixon used these as examples of why the democratic party was the wrong choice.
  • Twenty-sixth Amendment

    Citizens the age of 18 or older could be drafted but still could not vote(the limit was 21). With the anger from these people the Government established the Twenty-sixth Amendment, which allowed people to vote at the age of 18 or older.
