At the start of the war about 66% of Americans approved of the war. As it dragged on the support started to wane. Media accounts seemed to contradict Gov. reports. The Gov said that the North Vietnams hopes are bankrupt, even though everyday millions of americans saw casualties on television.

In March of 1965, a group of faculty members and students at the University of Xichigan joined together in a teach-in. The talked about surrounding issues about the war and reaffirmed their reasons for being against it. May 1965, 122 colleges held a National Teach-In by radio for more than 100,000 antiwar demonstrators.

Many protesters focused on what they saw as an unfair draft system. Not until 1969, college students could often deter military service until after they graduated.

Even with growing opposition President Johnson wanted to keep fighting in the war. At this time the United States was divided between Hawks and Doves.

The Johnson administration was starting to get not believed and unpopular and that’s how as credibility gap was made. The end begins to come into view. Yet millions of people saw images of American casualties on television in their living rooms each day as Vietnam became the first television war.

The vietcong and North Vietnamese launched a massive surprise attack. In what was called the Tet Offensive, guerilla fighters attacked most american airbases in South Vietnam.

In march 1968, Lyndon B Johnson went live on television and millions across America watched. Johnson announced that he would no longer be running for president anymore.

On April 4th, Martin Luther King was assassinated in memphis at his hotel. On June 5th, Robert Kennedy was also assassinated who was supposed to win the democratic nomination. He was killed by Sirhan Sirhan an Arab nationalist.

Nixon’s campaign promise to unify the nation and restore law and order appealed to Americans who feared their country was spinning out of control. He claimed to represent a silent majority of Americans who sought to maintain law and order but had been overshadowed in recent years by social and political turmoil. He promised that he had a secret plan” to bring “peace with honor in Vietnam.
