    When Jara was young his siblings and he had to cut firewood. They also had to raise pigs and take care of them. Since they were a little young they had to use a small axe.

    Victor Jara’s family was not that rich, so to get money they rented a room. Lucky for Victor it was a school teacher who rented the room. The school teacher knew how to play a couple of chords on a guitar therefore, she taught him those couple of chords.

    When Jara was 15 he dropped out of school. He dropped out because he wanted to prepare for priesthood. But he gave up these studies to join the army. Then a year later he got discharged. After that, he went to college to study in theatre. The college he went to is the University of Chile.

    In 1950 Victor met a girl named Joan Turner Bunster. They dated for about 10 years then got married in 1960. 5 years later they had a girl named Amanda. Together they had 2 boys named Eduardo and Roberto. Before the wedding, they had a child named Manuela.

    Victor was never wanted to be a folk singer until he met Violeta Parra. He met her in 1957. Violeta Parra is apart of the Nueva canción movement. After he met her he started to dedicate his songs to this movement.
  • Death

    Victor Jara died on November 16, 1973, at the age of only 41. The way he died was by 8 retired Chilean army officers. He was first kidnapped then killed by these 8 officers. In 2012 these 8 retired officers were charged with murder and kidnapping. Also, these 8 officers killed another singer. They were all killed by a gun.

    30 years after Jara died the stadium which he died in was renamed after him. The stadium is now named Victor Jara Stadium. This stadium can be found in Santiago, Chile.
