  • Thank special operations soldiers

    A day before Thanksgiving, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld visits Fort Bragg to thank special operations soldiers for their war efforts.
  • First soldier to die

    The first Fort Bragg soldier to die during the war in Afghanistan is killed in an accident at Bagram Airfield. Spc. Jason Disney, 21, was part of the 7th Transportation battalion. The main road at Bagram Airfield has been named for him.
  • First corps-size unit

    The 18th Airborne Corps deploys to Afghanistan led by then-Lt. Gen. Dan K. McNeill. It is the first corps-size unit to serve in the war.
  • For the next 13 years

    Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division first deploy to Afghanistan. Battalions, brigades and division headquarters would repeatedly deploy to the country and Iraq for the next 13 years, and some continue to serve in Afghanistan.
  • Special Forces Group is killed

    Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller of the 3rd Special Forces Group is killed in Afghanistan when he charges toward the enemy to protect the U.S. and Afghan allies. Miller is posthumously honored with the nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. He is the only Fort Bragg soldier to have received the medal for actions during the war in Afghanistan.
  • The al-Qaida leader

    Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader who escaped capture in the Afghan war, is killed in a raid on his compound in Pakistan.
  • Airborne Corps return

    After 11 months deployed, the 18th Airborne Corps returns to Fort Bragg. With the corps gone, officials shutter the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, making the 18th Airborne Corps the last corps-size unit to serve in Operation Enduring Freedom.
  • Has ended

    NATO officials announce Operation Enduring Freedom - the code name for the war in Afghanistan since 2001 - has ended. The new advisory mission is named Operation Resolute Support.
