His brother Theo urged him to start painting

While still in Holland, he studied rural life and created this work of art. -
He moved in with his brother Theo. While in Paris he met the painters Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Bernard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin. He discovered impressionism and pointillism.

After an argument with his friend Paul Gauguin, he ended up cutting a portion of his own ear lobe off. -
He began to alternate between fits of madness and lucidity and was sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy suffering with depression. There he created some 150 paintings, including The Starry Night. Watch the interactive video!!!
