    American War Of Independence

    The American colonists made a Declaration of Independence from British rule and defeated the British in the American War of Independence .
  • Declaration of Independence.

    On July 4,1776, delegates to the Continental Congress issued the Declaration of Independence to their English 'Masters' and this initiated the War of Independence in which the British forces tried vainly to hold onto their American colonies.
  • The American Constitution

    The Founding Fathers of the new nation, the United States of America, wrote the American Constitution. The Constitution set out the system of government for the new nation. The 13 colonies were now the 13 states.

    Early 19th century -- Americans migrated westward and southward, taking possession of Native American land and creating new states.

    American Civil War

    The Southern states fought the Northern states in the American civil war. By the early 19th century, slavery had died out in the Northern states but not in the Southern states. Tensions over slavery caused the South to declare its independence and to call itself the Confederate States of America or Confederacy. However, the North successfully fought to force the South back into the United States in the American civil war (1861-65).

    Abolishes slavery, and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.
  • 14th Amendement

    It says that anyone born in the United States is a citizen and has the rights of a citizen. This ensured that the freed slaves were officially U.S. citizens and were awarded the rights given to U.S. citizens by the Constitution. The amendment also said that once a person becomes a U.S. citizen, their citizenship cannot be taken away. The exception to this is if that person lied in order to become a citizen.

    Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.Despite this barriers continued such as literacy tests ( black people received less education than white people)
  • Jim Crow Laws

    After the Civil War the victorious Northern states gradually lost interest in African Americans in the South, so from the late 1870s, Southern whites introduced segregation laws -- a new form of race control. These laws were known as the Jim Crow laws.They essentially worked to indoctrinate the nation and tell it that black people were inferior.

  • Wall Street Crash Triggers Great Depression

    13 million people become unemployed after the Wall Street stock market crash of 1929 triggers what becomes known as the Great Depression.

    1941-45 -- In World War II the United States fought against Germany and Italy in Europe and against Japan in the Pacific. The leading US allies in this war were Russia (known by this time as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or USSR) and Britain.
