  • Sand Creek Massacre

    Sand Creek Massacre
    Sand Creek MassacreA group of 800 Cheyenne Indians in Colorado had made a treaty with the US military in which the military would protect the Indians. The next day the US Army surrounded the Cheyenne Indians in Sand Creek and sluaghtered them killing around 400 people. This led to retalitation from other Indian tribes and was a key spark of the many conflicts between the US Army and the Indians that followed.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    Transcontinental RailroadThe Transcontinental Railroad changed life in the US becuase it gave a much faster and safer way to travel from coast to coast. This allowed the West Coast, which was technologically behind the East Coast, to catch up. The building of the railroad began in 1963 with the Union Pacific railroad company working to meet the Central Pacific railroad company in Ogden, Utah. The building of the railroad also helped spike the economy by giving job opportunities and buying resources like steel.

  • Martinsburg Strike

    Martinsburg Strike
    Martinsburg StrikeThis labor strike was one of many that occured throughout the US, but this time the strikes began to spread and gain momentum. Strikes then spread to the Pennsylvania and Reading Railroads and from there into the Midwest. These series of strikes that all began with the Martinsburg Strike are known as the Great Upheaval which lasted until August 1st.

    World War 1
    World War 1World War 1 was supposed to be a quick war due to the new technologies and stronger weapons. It turned out that WWI was a long and gruesome war due to the fact that it was trench warfare. The US tried to stay out of the war, but after the German U-boats began bombing passenger boats with US citizens aboard, Wilson decided it was time to enter the war. The US helped Britain and France to defeat the Germans and due to the weak European countries, the US became the world power after this war.

    Panama CanalThe Panama Canal was originally started by the French, but it was a failed attempt. The US government under President Roosevelt then decided to mkae a deal wth Panama and buy the French equipment in order to continue the canal and complete it. This canal finally created an efficient way to get from one coast to the other by ship. This was important for trade throughout the US and rest of the world.

    Treaty of VersaillesThe Treaty of Versailles is the treaty that ended WWI. Representatives from the US, Britain, France, and Italy got together to discuss how to punish Germany. Wilson was more leniant then the other 3, but because he was outnumbered, Germany ended up recieveing large military restrictions, land loss, and major debt to the other countries. Wilson also recommended that they develop a League of Nations in which every country has a representative that meet together to prevent future conflicts.

    Harlem RenaissanceThe Harlem Renaissance began in 1919 and continued into the early 1930s. It took place during the roaring 20s when the American economy was doing better than ever following WWI. The renaissance was a time when the African American culture was reborn. Through poetry and paintings, but most of all jazz music, the black community was able to gain some equality. Jazz music played by African Americans was enjoyed by all and this cultural step helped gain African American eqaulity.

    Great DepressionThe Great Depression began with the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The Wal Street crash then led to companies not being able to pay off their loans from banks and so the banks couldn't pay the people and when no one has any money, no one can buy new products to keep the market moving. This depression began in 1929 but continued well into the 1930s and it to this day is the biggest economic collapse in US History. Millions of Americans were job less and had nothing but the clothes on their backs.

    American IsolationismIsolationism was what the US people wanted during the 1930s. The US had finished helping Europe in the first World War and US citizens as well as much of the government felt it was time to focus more on domestic problems. International affairs were considered low on a scale of importance and it was the goal of the US to avoid any international conflict. An example of this is when Japan entered Chinese Manchuria, the Stimpson Doctrine decided to not recognize territory illegally occupied by Japan

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    Attack on Pearl HarborThe attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise bombing by the Japanese on the US naval base in Hawaii. Japan was in the process of taking control of al of East Asia, but their only threat was the US. After the Japanese attacked, the US went to war, but the Japanese ally Germany declared war on the US and so it was a war over two oceans for the US. The war with Japan ended with the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan which changed warfare forever.

    Invasion of NormandyThe invasion of Normandy was the beginning of the end for Germany during WWII. The US sent troops to France along with Britain and their large numbers allowed them to storm the beach and get onto French mainland. From Normandy, the troops were able to move in towards Berlin. On the other side, after the Russian win in Stalingrad, they began advancing and it was only a matter of time before Russia and the US/Britian met in Berlin and defeated Germany to end WWII.

    Cold WarThe Cold War has no official start date, but it began around 1946-1947. The Cold War lasted for about 50 years after this with various conflicts fought throughout the world. The US was anti-communism while the Soviet Union was pro-communism. The US was fighting to prevent the spread of communism and therefor stop the Soviet Union's spread of influence. Various wars were fought throughout the world such as in Korea and Vietnam.

    McCarthyismMcCarthyism is a tie during US history in which Wisconsin Senator, Joseph McCarthy, began making accusations about people with political power. He accused many people in government as being Communists and this caused for a large number of investigations to be done on many politicians. This was known as the Second Red Scare as many Americans began worrying about Communism taking over in the US which was a frightening thought during the time of the Cold War. Most accusations were false.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam WarThe Vietnam War was an event that took place as part of the Cold War. Communism was spreading to Vietnam and the US sent troops to support the South Vietnamese fighting against communism. As a result China sent troops to support the North Vietnamese along with Russia and other communist allies. This was a war against communism fought in another country like many of the conflicts during the Cold War. The important aspect of ths war is that the US didn't achieve their goal.
  • Bus Boycott

    Bus BoycottRosa Parks was asked to moveto the back of the bus because ome white people wanted her seat that was closer to the front, but still in the colored section. When she refused, she was rrested. This event sparked the Bus Boycott in which 98% of African Americans joined in. Martin Luther King Jr. took the lead on this boycott which eventually ended segregation of buses. This was the start of civil rights movement for the blacks led by Mr. King.
  • Roe vs. Wade

    Roe vs. WadeThis was a case in which a Texas mother argued that her constitutional right was violated when she wasn't allowed to get an abortion. The court agreed and this was a big change for women. They usually got stuck with the kids, but this was big change to the social norms. The rule then became that if it was within the first trimester of pregnancy then they were able to get an abortion. This was a big step in the civil rights movement for movement.
  • Americanization

    AmericanizationAmericanization was a key part of the late 20th Century. As America settled in as the only world super power, it began to spread itʼs culture and ideas throughout the world. This can be seen in as franchises like McDonaldʼs and Nike began showing up across the globe. Many foreign companies even began Americanizing in order to satisfy the large number American consumers. Not only did the American culture spread, but because of Americaʼs strong economy and military, they influenced globalization.
  • Reaganomics

    Reaganomics Reagnomics is the word used to describe President Ronald Reagan's economic plan. His plan was also known as the trickle-down theory meaning that he would cut taxes for the wealthy hoping that it would allow the wealthy to buy more goods from the poor as well as create more jobs for the poor. He also increased federal spending in various sectors, but most evidently in the military. Reaganomics increased the federal deficit.

    Information Age Information Age is the time period in the US when the internet became available to everyone and people were now able to surf the web. The age of information changed the world as well as the US. With email, people were able to respond to each other across the globe, in a matter of minutes. Chat rooms were created in order to meet new people and technology and information opened the doors for many new things. It changed the way companies were ran and more importantly changed their advertisement.
  • Operation Desert Storm (Gulf War)

    Operation Desert Storm (Gulf War)
    Operation Desert StormOperation Desert Storm was a US mission that took place during the Gulf War. The US sent troops in Saudi Arabia in order to protect its borders from the Iraqis. The US along with some help from the UN then progressed forward into Kuwait regaining the territory and freeing the country from Iraqi rule. The Iraqis eventually agreed to peace and left the oil rich countries alone, but they still caused large amounts of damage. This was the first military conflict since Vietnam and was a nice win.
