    This panic was the first directly caused by industrial capitalism. This event caused a depression in the United States and Europe lasting about six years. The changing over from a precious metal monetary system to a gold-standard currency triggered this economic panic.

    The Gilded Age, from 1870 to 1900, was a time of tremendous economic growth and prosperity. This prosperity was not for all, the wealthy became wealthier and the poor became poorer. Corruption was rampant at this time, with many politicians being controlled by large corporations. The workers at this time had to fight for their rights, most of the time loosing.

  • Hawaiian Annexation

    Hawaiian Annexation
    The annexation of Hawaii highlighted the United States as a global power, showing that we can, just as European nations had, form our own empire. Hawaii's economy was very dependent on the US, so a strong relationship had formed. This then lead to its eventual annexation.

    The invention of the mass produced automobile brought about a change in society. Gone were the days of horses and carriages, now people had the freedom to move about in an efficient manner. What helped to make these automobiles so affordable was the assembly line. This streamlined production and speed up the production time.

    A global war that was supposed to bring about change and growth. This war was the first modern war; the first war with flame throwers and tanks, the first war to employ a large number of aircraft for fighting, and the first war to employ chemical weapons. This war was thought to be the war that would end all wars.

    The Construction of The Panama Canal
    The Panama Canal is a waterway through Panama that connects the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The reason for the construction of the canal was to reduce the time it took to travel, by water, from one coast of the United Sates to another. The Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty granted the United States the right to build a canal in Panama.

    The daft is a war-time mechanism that is deployed to help bolster the number of troops in the armed services. Under the law, virtually all male U.S. citizens are made to register through the Selective Service. The Selective Training and Service Act was signed by President Roosevelt in 1917.

  • Teenagers

    Teenagers
    Teens enjoyed a freedom from parental supervision that was unknown to past generations. This lack of control by the parents lead to a sexual revolution. Experimentation with sexual behaviors before marriage became almost a norm. Marriage was also pushed back from 16-17 to into the 20s. Teenagers now were staying in school longer because they were getting married later.

  • Isolationism

    Isolationism
    The combination of the Great Depression and the losses in World War I brought about the feelings of isolationism in the 1930s. The American citizens felt that instead of focusing on international issues and conflicts they should focus on addressing and fixing our economic and social issues at home. There were many campaigns to keep the United States out of future wars, but none of those campaigns seemed to be that effective.

  • Fascism

    Fascism
    Fascism is a political ideology that was prevalent in central, southern, and eastern Europe during the early to mid 1900s. Characteristics of a fascist regime are extreme militaristic nationalism, hatred of democracy, and no political or cultural liberalism. A major component during this time period was a belief in natural social hierarchy, meaning that one race was deemed to be superior to all others. This lead to violence against the "lower" races.

  • Pearl Harbor Attack

    Pearl Harbor Attack
    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack launched by the Japanese with hopes of destroying the United States Naval fleet in the Pacific. If the entire fleet was destroyed Japan would be able to conduct its conquest of all of Southeast Asia. This attack promoted Congress to declare war on Japan.

  • The Manhattan Project

    The Manhattan Project
    This project was a secret research program run by the United States government that produced the first atomic bombs. The government felt it was necessary to develop this dangerous technology in order to protect its citizens from foreign attack. The first bomb produced by the project was detonated in New Mexico, the next two bombs were send to Japan and dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These two bombs ended the second world war.

    The United Nations
    The United Nations Charter was initially signed by 50 Member Sates, this has since expanded to 193 members. The United Nations is very diverse in its purposes and its actions. Primary functions of the United Nations include protecting human rights and delivering humanitarian aid. There are several main groups in the UN these are The UN Security Council, The General Assembly, and The International Court of Justice.

    The Vietnam War
    The Vietnam War is the second-longest war fought in United States history. This war was a power struggle between the US and the people of Vietnam. The US was trying to show its dominance on a global stage, but was not willing to put its all forward. This war led to a division in the American public, whether or not this was a war worth fighting. In the end the American people decided this was a war we did not need to fight.

  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    Almost 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation the African Americans of the Southern United States were being oppressed. They still had not gained all the rights they were promised. They decided that this needed to change. Civil Rights activists used methods such as nonviolent protesting and civil disobedience to bring about the change they wanted. Their efforts payed off and they were granted the rights they deserved.

  • Modern Feminism

    Modern Feminism
    The feminist movement of the 1960s and '70s was focused on breaking down stereotypes that were held up by the previous generations. The feminists were looking for rights that were never granted to them. The wanted the right to vote and they wanted to do what they wanted to do not what society wanted them to do.

  • Iran-Contra Affair

    Iran-Contra Affair
    President Ronald Reagan's administration supplied weapons to Iran, with out the knowledge of the President. The main individuals involved in the affair hoped to secure the release of American hostages held in Lebanon by a terrorist cell loyal to Iran's leader. Many high ranking government officials including the CIA chief were investigated for their involvement in the events. President Reagan was found not have to known about the arms dealings.

  • The End of the Cold War

    The End of the Cold War
    As the 1980s came to an end much of the Eastern Bloc began to crumble. In 1989, every communist state in the region replaced its government with a non-communist one.The Hungarian government took down the fencing with its neighbors and the Berlin Wall fell. In late 1991 the Soviet Union dissolved into its component republics. With surprising speed, the Iron Curtain fell and the Cold War came to an end.

    North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
    This agreement created one of the world’s largest free trade zones. With its signing the member nations, Canada, the United States, and Mexico, all build foundations for strong economic growth and rising prosperity. NAFTA demonstrates how free trade increases wealth and the competitiveness in particular economic fields. Most tariffs and trade barriers were removed with its signing.

    Globalization
    Globalization is the development of an more integrated global economy. This economy is marked by free trade and the usage of cheap foreign labor markets. The United States is the leading global power with other nations trying to emulate our success. Our success relates directly to the success of other nations, we improve and in turn they improve. Globalization helps to diversify our planet, not segregate.
