  • The start of the Seven Years War

    The Seven Years War begins when George Washington attempted to remove the French from the forts they were creating in Pennsylvania. This did not go in his favor, and was a loss for the British colonists.
  • Colonists start to win battles.

    Colonists start to win battles.
    Up until now, the colonists were mostly losing battles in this war. Then, during this year, more wins came their way as they captured Forts Duquesne, Ticonderoga, and Louisbourg.
  • The end of the Seven Years War

    The Seven Years War came to a close with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

    Proclamation Line issued by British Parliament. This was significant because it was used to stop settlers from moving out west, and then those settlers disobeyed and moved anyway. These actions were just hints of what would come to be the ideas behind the American Revolution.
  • The steamboat enters the scene

    The steamboat enters the scene
    The steamboat started to play a big part in transportation of goods/services, along with the introduction of many canals to support this invention. This was shown when a steamboat was taken from New York to Albany.
  • Canals are built near New York

    An example of how important canals and faster transportation were during the beginnings of the Market Revolution, 363 miles of canals were created to connect the Great Lakes with the Hudson River, thus making New York a perfect port for trade and commerce.
  • Railroads start popping up

    Railroads start popping up
    Railroads were becoming another mode of transport with the creation of the first commercial railroad, the Baltimore and the Ohio.
  • Steam powered factories are introduced

    Factories were able to run on steam power now, so they weren’t limited to bodies of water (as they used to run on water power) and mass production spread from New England to the west.
  • Irish Potato Famine

    Irish Potato Famine
    Irish men and women suffered during this time from a potato famine, which was a significant crop for them, which led to a mass immigration (over time) of 1 million Irish people to the United States. These people, among other immigrants from Scandinavia and France, aided in the booming growth of cities like New York and Boston.

    Throughout this time period, 40 million immigrants came to the United States. They fought against discrimination (especially the chinese) and sought out better jobs in the industrializing economy of the US.

    1880 - 20% of the population lived in cities, and 12 cities had a population of 100,000 or more.
    1900 - 38% of the population lived in cities, and 18 cities had a population of 100,000 or more.
    1920- 68% of the population lived in cities, and 26 cities had a population of 100,000 or more.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    This act led to the massive amount of settlers who moved into territories such as the Dakotas, Kansas, Nebraska, Texas. and Oklahoma. (About 2,800,000 people).
  • Cold War Begins

    Cold War Begins
    The Cold War begins as a conflict between the US and the USSR, where both are fighting for their ideals and attempting to spread their worldwide influence.
  • Truman Contains Communism

    Truman Contains Communism
    Harry Truman, elected president in 1945, created the Truman Doctrine and vowed to contain communism to where it already is, and disallow the spread of it. He shows this in 1947 when he sends $400 million dollars of aid to Greece and Turkey.
  • Dennis Vs the Supreme Court

    In this court case, the Supreme Court flat out ruled being a communist leader as a crime. This was an example of how the United States responded to communism. Other examples are how the United States supported things like individual expression (art) and the production of anti-communist movies in Hollywood, such as The Red Menace.
  • Cold War Ends

    The Cold War comes to a close after tensions deflate over time. There wasn't a lot of actual fighting, except for in Vietnam and Korea, and a nuclear war was avoided. This result shows how the government acts as a protector to its people and supported loyalty toward the US government.
