  • The Cattle Boom

    The Cattle Boom began in 1849 when tens of thousands of cattle were herded to present day California and the Sacremento Valley area. These cattle herders would herd their cattle for 10-15 miles a day on their way to the market where they could sell their head for profit. This "Cattle Boom" began in 1849 and ended sometime in 1962, this boom in cattle brought money into Werstern America, helping the economy of that area.
  • Cowboys

    Cowboys originated in the western United States in the 1800's. The term "Cowboy" was used to reffer to the men who herded the cattle into the West. Although many people believe Cowboys to be tough, unlawful men, they were actually men of business who's main goal was to herd their cattle west in search of profit.
  • Seward's Folly

    Seward's Folly
    Seward's Folly was the purchase of Alaska on March 30th, 1867. U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward signed a treaty with Russia in which Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7 million. This treaty was referred to as a "Folly" because Alaska's land was only priced at two cents an acre, However Seward bought it for 7 million and at first the land was useless, but after a few years gold was discovered in Alaska.

    The Building of The Panama Canal

    The Panama Canal was a great Canal built in Panama in the late 1800's and into the early 1900's. This canal was built so cargo ships could travel through the safe pasages of Panama instead of risking traveling down around the southern tip of South America, a long journery inhabited with pirates and the risk of deadly storms. The construction of the canal had begun in 1881 and from 1881-1888 it was being constructed by the French. However they stopped construction in 1888.
  • Dawes Act

    The Dawes Act of 1887 was an Act that provided allotments of land to the Indians on reservations. Depending on the age and family situations of the many Indians, they were alloted different plots of land. This act was created by U.S. Congressman Henry Dawes on February 8th, 1887
  • Yellow Journalism

    Yellow Journalism
    Yellow Journalism was a type of journalism that consisted of many lies and often wrote stories to seem a lot worse than they actuially were. Yellow Journalism's biggest case was in 1898, when a U.S. battleship, the Maine, was sunk in Havana harbor. The Yellow Journalist wrote that the U.S. ship was sunk by the Spanish. This act of Yellow Journalism was known as the spark of the Spanish-American War.

  • Theodore Roosevelt Is Elected as U.S. President

    On September 14th, 1901, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt became president of the United States due to President McKinley's assassination. Teddy Roosevelt was president for two whole terms from 1901-1909, being re-elected in 1905. Roosevelt was a strong president who admitted the state of Oklahoma into the Union in 1907, however Roosevelt denied a third term in 1909. Teddy Roosevelt died on January 6th, 1919 in Oyster Bay, New York at the age of 60.

    Finishing the Panama Canal

    After the French had stopped the construction in 1888, there was no construction for the next 16 years. However, In 1904 the United States began to work on the Canal and in 1914 the canal had been completed. This canal was a milestone not only for the United States but for the rest of the world to be able to use this shipping route was a tremendous achievement.
  • Woodrow Wilson Elected as U.S. President

    Woodrow Wilson Elected as U.S. President
    President Woodrow Wilson took the role of president on March 4th, 1913. He was the 28th president of the United States of America. Wilson served two terms as president from 1913-1921 and was a great supporter of the progressive movement. President Wilson died on February 3rd, 1924 at the age of 67 in Washington D.C.

  • War Bonds

    War Bonds
    During World War I, the United States began to ask citizens to purchase "War Bonds" as a way to help fund the military forces of World War II. These War Bonds could be purchased to help the economy pay for the War, these bonds could even be bought through postal stamps. War Bonds ranged from as low as ten cents and as high as $10,000. The first War Bond was sold to President Franklin Roosevelt.

  • Propaganda in World War I

    Propaganda played a great role in the social aspect of World War I. Propaganda was used to show what was happening during the war, it potrayed the enemies of the United States and what the U.S. was doing to win the War. Propaganda was also used to get United States citizens to purchase more War Bonds to help in funding the military for better chances of winning the war.
  • Prohibition

    Prohibition was introduced in 1920 by the 18th Amendment. This Amendment was activated to make all alcohol illegal. The idea behind making alcohol illegal was that alcohol was tearing families apart and if it was illegal the American families would not be splitting up. Although this Amendment was ment to help America, it ended up hurting America. Because alcohol was outlawed, this caused rumrunners, flappers, and many people began to illegally smuggle alcohol around the country.
  • The Scopes Trial

    In 1925, John Scopes was convicted for teaching evolution in school, he was fined $100. John Scopes was teaching against the religious belief that God had created the world and man itself, Scopes was teaching that we developed from monkeys, therefore his trial was also known as the "Monkey Trial". The jury of this trial found John Scopes guilty of violating the Tennessee Law of teaching evolution in the classroom.
  • The Ku Klux Klan

    The Ku Klux Klan
    The Ku Klux Kan (KKK) was origianlly founded in 1866 but its official "boom" began in the 1920's. By the mid 1920's, the Klan had approximately eight million Klansmen in full support of the KKK. The Klan was in support of white-Christian people and they hated blacks and non Christian people. The Klan recruited many members and even tried to get a Klansmen into any type of US politcs

  • Henry Ford

    Henry Ford
    Henry Ford was born in 1863, in the late 1920's, Ford's Motor Company was producing fine automobiles such as it's "Model-A" which was released on December 2nd, 1927. Ford believed in providing work for immigrants and he played a large part in Americas social strength. Ford wanted immigrants to settle down as part of the working middle-class and work for him in making his automobiles in the 1920-30's.

  • Herbert Hoover becomes President of the United States

    Herbert Hoover becomes President of the United States
    President Hoover was born on August 10th, 1874 and took office in 1929 at the age of 53. Herbert Hoover was the 31st president of the United States and was one of the least appreciated presidents. Herbert Hoover was president as the United States went into the Great Derpression in the late 1920's and into the 1930's, due to Hoover's presidency, many blamed him for the depression.

  • The Stock Market Crash

    The Stock Market Crash occurred in 1929 when the stocks that many Amerian citizens had invested in crashed and many people went bankrupt. On "Black Tuesday" the stocks crashed completely, losing billions of dollars and leaving millions of investers with no money whatsoever. By 1933 most of the banks of America had crashed also due to investing other peoples money, over 15 million people became unemployed and the Great Depression had begun in full swing. The depression ended in 1939 with FDR.
  • Okies

    "Okies" were peope who moved West during the Great Depression. These people would literally pack all of their necessities and prized posessions into their automobiles and head west in search of a new life. Families would load these automobiles with as much as they could hold on the inside and out, once they arrived in the western part of the United States, these families would go out in search of work to help turn their lives aorund.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt Is Elected As U.S. President

    Franklin D. Roosevelt Is Elected As U.S. President
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was elected in 1933, he served three terms as president of the United States from 1933-1945. Roosevelt served as president through World War II which ended in 1945. Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States, FDR died on April 12th, 1945 at the age of 63.

  • Draft Dodgers

    "Draft Dodgers" were people who attempted to dodge being drafted into the military in fear of going off to war. These dodgers would go to extreme extents just to dodge the draft. Dodgers would do things such as flee to Canada, burn their draft cards or even shooting off their toes as a physical way out of the draft. However if these dodgers were found attempting to dodge the draft they would be prosecuted and would be drafted anyways.
  • Baby Boom

    Almost exactly nine months after the ending of World War II, an even occurred referred to as the "Baby Boom". This Baby Boom was in fact a "boom" of babies, due to soldiers coming home from war, many wanted to immediately settle down and start a family, this resulted in millions of new babies being born. From 1946-1964 this "Baby Boom" had been going on and by 1964 almost 80 million new babies had been born throughout the era of the Baby Boom. The Baby Boom finally settled in 1964.
  • G.I. Bill

    According to History.com "The G.I. Bill subsidized low-cost mortgages for returning soldiers, which meant that it was often cheaper to buy one of these suburban houses than it was to rent an apartment in the city." This Bill helped soldiers afford houses and even pay for educations when they came home from the war.
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower Is Elected As U.S. President

    Dwight D. Eisenhower Is Elected As U.S. President
    Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected as U.S. President on January 20th, 1953. Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States. During World War II, Eisenhower was a five-star General in the U.S. Army. Eisenhower served as President of the United States for two terms from 1953-1961. Eisenhower died in Washington D.C. on March 28th, 1969.

  • John F. Kennedy Is Elected As U.S. President

    John F. Kennedy Is Elected As U.S. President
    January 20th, 1961, John F. Kennedy is elected as President of the United States. John F. Kennedy was known to be one of the greatest U.S. Presidents of all time, he was one of the best public speakers in Presidential history. John F. Kennedy (JFK) was the 35th president of the United States. JFK only served half a term due to his assassination on November 22nd, 1963 when he was shot and killed while riding in a car. John F. Kennedy was 46 when he was assassinated.

  • Medicare

    Medicare was created in the United States in 1965 as a way to guarantee health insurance to American citizens 65 years or older. Medicare also applied to anyone with disabilities. Medicare was created in 1965 by the United States Congress under the Title XVIII of the Social Security Act and has been in use ever since.
  • Richard Nixon Becomes President of The United States

    Richard Nixon Becomes President of The United States
    Richard Nixon was elected on January 20th, 1969. He was the 37th President of the United States, he served one term and after beginning his second term he resigned on August 9th, 1974. Nixon was Born on January 9th,1913 and died on April 22nd, 1994 at the age of 81.

    Woodstock

    Woodstock was one of the largest music festivals of all time. This concert lasted three days, including 33 artists such as "The Who", "Country Joe and The Fish", "Santana", and Jimi Hendrex. This concert had more than 500,000 people on a 600 acre farm, this concert was known as "the three days of peace" in an act of protesting the Vietnam War.
