  • Signing of the Decloration of Independence

    On July 1, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, and on the following day 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence.

    The second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union.
  • The British Surrender at Yorktown

    When the British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his troops in Yorktown, Virginia. General Cornwallis brought 8,000 British troops to Yorktown. They expected help from British ships sent from New York.
  • Shays Rebellion: Attack on the Springfield Armory

    On this day, 2,000 farmers from western Massachusetts attacked the new federal arsenal at Springfield. The government soldiers returned fire, killing three of the farmers. This was the beginning of the end of the uprising known as Shays' Rebellion

    Eli Whitneys patent for the cotton gin was issued on March 14th, 1794. The cotton gin helped pick the seeds out of the cotton. It increased the demand for slaves in the south because they wanted the slaves to work it because it was very dangerous.

    Lewis and Clark explored land that was never exploredrd before. The set out to explore the land to the coast to see what was out there. They met some indins on the way, and one of the indians they met came along with them and her beby, kept them safe over the journey because it was a symbol of peace.

    The first textile mill was built in Lowell, Massachusetts and changed the US forever. The textile mill helps making cloths fatser and easier.

    Trail of Tears

    The trail of tears were a devastating thing that happened to the Native American tribe, the Cherooke tribe. Andrew Jackson forced them out of thier land because many people wanted gold in thier land. They were forced to move out west and many, many people died along he way and they faced many hardships troughout the journey.
  • Gold Discovered at Sutter's Mill

    James W. Marshall was building a sawmill for Captain John Sutter, using water from the South Fork of the American River. He noticed several things of metal in the water and recognized them to be gold. Though he tried to keep it a secret, the word spread quickly, and triggered the California Gold Rush of 1849
  • Signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    The signing happened in Mexico and officially ended the war. The treaty also added 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the land that makes up all or parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
