Lincoln was elected President on the Republican ticket. His election was a catalyst for the start of the Civil War.

South Carolina was the first to leave the Union. They left shortly after Lincoln was elected President. The South Carolinian convention voted unanimously in a 169-0 vote to leave.

The states above were quick to follow South Carolina's example. Mississippi was on January 9, Florida on January 10, Alabama on January 11, Georgia on January 19, Louisiana on January 26, and Texas on February 1. Of these states, Texas was the only one to put up a popular vote for secession.

The seven seceded states met in Montgomery, Alabama to organize and form a new nation of the separated states. From this convention, the Confederacy was born and Jefferson Davis was elected president.

The official start of the war was when Confederate General Beauregard fired upon the federal Fort Sumter. This four year war devastated the entire nation and left mass amounts of death and destruction in it's wake.

Not a particularly bloody battle but proof the Civil War was going to be long and expensive. The battle was won by the Confederate States.

One of the bloodiest battles in the war to that date. It had a total of twenty-three thousand causalities and ended in the capture of New Orleans for the Union. Union Victory.

A Confederate victory with a cost. The Confederacy lost general "Stonewall" Jackson after he was mortally wounded. This battle also had heavy causalities on the Confederate side.

Bloodiest battle of the Civil War by far with fifty-one thousand causalities. This was also Lee's final northern incursion as it resulted in a retreat from Pennsylvania. Union Victory.

Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. This ended the major Confederate military operations and therefore the war.
