  • Elevators

    Elevators are refined to be more useful and safe for people in coal mines and high rise buildings. This is an example of progress because it shows a leap in technology.
  • Miners

    As America began to expand to the west, miners also moved to the west in search of more minerals to sell. This is an example of movement because it showed more groups of people colonizing the west.
  • Refrigerator Cars

    These railway cars were refrigerated to allow for long range transport of beef and other food supplies. This is an example of progress because it allowed for beef to be sold all over the country from the west.
  • Cowboys

    "Cowboys" who ere basic farmers and workers and such, started to move to the west where they had less rules and they could do what they wanted. This is an example of movement because it was starting to characterize the west.
  • Farmers

    Farmers began to move west to find more fertile soil as the land in the east was becoming overused. This is an example of movement because it made the community in the west grow even larger.
  • Railroad Workers

    Railroad workers began to move to the west as the transcontinental railroad was built. This is an example of movement because it gave more people more jobs in the west.
  • Bessemer Process

    This was an inexpensive way to mass produce steel. This is an example of progress because it allowed steel companies to make a lot more money and for more buildings to be built.
  • Morrill Land

    This land was provided to create colleges centered around agriculture and mechanic arts. This is an example of progress because this opened up more opportunities for people who wanted an education and who needed a job.
  • Homestead Act

    provided settlers with 160 acres of of public land in the west. This is an example of the American dream because it allowed people to own land who could never own land before.
  • Transcontinental railroad

    This railroad connected the east coast and the west coast. This is an example of progress because it allowed much easier travel from the east to the west and vice versa.
  • Sand Creek Massacre

    US Troops attacked and destroyed a village of native Americans. This is an example of conflict because it showed the Americans forcing the natives off of their land even more violently now.
  • Open Range System

    This is the system in which cattle were made and slaughtered in mass amounts for beef. This is an example of conflict because it was very controversial and also started to create a monopoly in the west that the east couldn't compete with.
  • Barbwire

    This wire was created to stop people from climbing fences and to stop animals from escaping captivity. This is an example of progress because it shows how people are getting more inventive.
  • Battle of little big horn

    The natives tried to take the river of little big horn and defeated the US troops. This is an example of conflict because there was now more fighting on american territory after the Civil War.
  • Dumbbell Tenements

    Poor living conditions built for people who could not buy their own land. This is an example of conflict because they almost forced people to live in these tenements rather than find their own land.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    This law prohibited all immigration for chinese laborers. This is an example of conflict because this meant America was no longer the place where everyone could go to feel welcome and have a good life.
  • Dawes Act

    This provided the president power to control Indian land. This is an example of conflict because it was taking away the Indians rights to their property.
  • Oklahoma Land Rush

    People rushed to the lands of Oklahoma once it was open for settlement. This is an example of the American Dream because it showed how easy it was starting to be for people to claim their own land.
  • Wounded Knee

    Both the US and Natives began firing onto each other as the US tried to disarm them. This is an example of conflict because it shows growing violence between the natives and the US.
  • Frederick Jackson Turner

    He taught many people and trained several PHD's. This is an example of the American Dream because it showed how people could get a good education a lot easier now.
