    In 1843 Grant graduated from West Point military academy. He was only one of three presidents to graduate from West Point. After he graduated he planned to only be in the army for the mandatory four years.

    Grant married Julia Dent who he stayed married to his entire adult life. There marriage is an unusualy rich and close relationship. He corted Julia for four years and much of the wooing took place over letters that surrvived .

    Grant is victorious at Fort Donelson. After this battle he was given the nickname Unconditional surrender and put into the eye of the public. Also it made his choices more pressuring.

    At this battle Grant showed his iron will and stubbornness helped them hold the lines on the second day. But even with his army being pushed back in the begining he stayed strong confident. Also even after the Union defeat at the second battle of Bull Run and the retreat of other generals he kept pushing south and west.
  • Surrender of Vicksburg

    After the end of the siege on Vicksburg he started the tour de force the greatest military campaigns. At the siege he used the help of the Navy to help him carry out the largest U.S. amphibious opertion prior to World War 2. Even with his supply line cut he had his soldiers live off the land.

    Grant is promted to general in charge of all U.S. armies. He is the first General to be given this position. He was given the position by Abraham Lincoln.
  • Grant Defeats Lee

    Grant defeated Lee and the surrender happened at Appomatox court house. This is where he gave more than generous surrender terms. He also prevented trials for treason against Lee.

    Grant died just as his memoirs were being published. He died because of cancer of the tongue. With the few years left he spent his time trying to leave money for his family for when he was gone.
