    Westward Expansion

    Many associated westward expansion and owning land with freedom. The U.S. became more innovative with agricultural and the development of more railroads began. During expansion, the colonists fought with the Native Americans already occupying the land.

    Gilded Age

    The U.S. has begun industrialization, and cities start growing. Many start immigrating to the U.S. as well.

    U.S. Imperialism

    The United States grew in power all over the world. A war with Spain broke out in 1898 and the U.S. annexed Hawaii.

    Progressive Era

    Progressive reformers wanted to improve civilians' lives by striving to regulate child labor, address health hazards and give them more control over the government. Segregation and the struggle for women's suffrage continues.

    World War I

    When WWI began, President Woodrow Wilson said the U.S. would remain neutral. Trench warfare began in WWI, and Germany would soon sink Britain's ship Lusitania, provoking the U.S. to intervene. The Zimmerman Telegram also reveals a German plan to have Mexico start a war with the U.S.

    The Roaring Twenties

    Considered the Roaring Twenties as the younger generation rebelled against the normal. Cities started growing, jazz bands were popular and the KKK was still a prominent problem along with women's roles and race.

    The Great Depression

    In 1929 the stock market crashed, and unemployment was as high as ever. As a result the government starting becoming more present in people's daily lives. The American people considered it protection.

    World War II

    World War II claimed the most lives, was the most expensive and involved the most nations than any other war. Though it did help end unemployment and gave women jobs, it was also the start of nuclear power.

    The Cold War

    After the war, the U.S. had issues with the Soviet Union. Both were in an arms (particularly over nuclear weapons) and space race. Communism also came about during this time in China.

    Civil Rights Movement

    During this time, groups of people fought for more rights. African Americans protested segregation, feminists fought for equality, Native Americans demanded tribes govern themselves and for the government to recognize their claims of land.

    Vietnam War

    Anti-communist South and communist North Vietnam were battling, and the U.S. was helping out the South. President Lyndon Johnson escalated the war, and as a result the U.S. suffered many casualties. Many people protested the war and wondered if it was necessary. Eventually they came to an agreement and the South and North were reunited.

    Late 20th Century

    Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan all attempted to strengthen the United States' influence in foreign affairs. By the 90's the United States was very powerful with a strong military and productive economy.

    U.S. in the 21st Century

    In the 2000s, George W. Bush won the presidential election. The U.S. suffered a terrorist attack, and went to war with Iraq, taking down Hussein's government. Bush won the election again in 2004. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit and took many lives, destroying homes and other buildings. In 2008, Barrack Obama was elected president.
