    Battle of the Atlantic

    It was one of the most important fronts in WWII. In September of 1939, Germany immediately sought to capitalize on Britain's dependence on imports of food and raw materials. After the Wehrmacht attacked it in June of 1941, the USSR repeatedly asserted its dire need for imported equipment and supplies.

    The Dunkirk evacuation was in WWII and was the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force and other Allied troops from the French seaport of Dunkirk to England. Naval vessels and hundreds of civilian boats were used in the evacuation which began on May 26.

    The Battle during WWII which was the successful defense of Great Britain against unremitting and destructive air raids conducted by the German Air Force from July through September 1940, which was after the fall of France. It was a contest for air superiority over the English channel and southern England as a necessary precondition for a German invasion attempt in 1940.

  • Doolittle Raid

    Doolittle Raid

    In the wake of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the joint Army Navy bombing project was to bomb Japanese industrial centers, to inflict both material and psychological damage upon the enemy. Ultimately, it was hoped that the prosecution of the raid would improve the United States relationships with its allies and receive a favorable reaction of the Americans.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    This battle concluded on May 8th 1942 with the Japanese retiring from the area and calling off the Port Moresby amphibious operation. Before the battle was over, Japanese planes damaged both Lexington and Yorktown which caused big explosions on board with each carrier. It was a major naval battle.

    Russian troops discover Auschwitz

    When Soviet soldiers poured into Auschwitz on January 27th, 1945, they encountered warehouses filled with massive quantities of other peoples belongings. Most of those peoples belongings were dead, murdered by Nazis in the Holocaust's concentration camps. While the Russian troops walked around, they realized there were thousands of people left to die by the SS guards who evacuated the concentration camps after trying to cover up their crimes.     The battle of Okinawa was the last major battle of WWII and one of the bloodiest. On Easter Sunday of 1945, the Navy's fifth fleet and more than 180,000 US army and marine corps troops descended on the Pacific Island of Okinawa for a final push on Japan.
