  • Compromise of 1850

    The Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on Jan. 1, 1850. Part of the Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Act was changed and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854

    Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
    Senator Stephen Douglas introduced a bill that divided the land west of Missouri into two, Kansas & Nebraska. Argued for Popular Sovereignty - Voters decided. Led to Senator Preston Brooks (SC) attacking Charles Sumner (Mass) in the senate chambers.
  • Dred Scott Decision of 1857

    Chief Justice Roger Taney's response, "Slaves were private property and thus no decision (rights) needs to be made."
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debate

    Lincoln-Douglas Debate
    Series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln (republican & also against slavery which causes conflict later on) and Stephen Douglas (democratic). Ended Oct.15. A famous quote during that time by Lincoln, " A house divided cannot stand." Douglas won the senate seat.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Democratic party splits over issue of slavery and republican nominates Lincoln. Lincoln wins election without winning any electoral votes from the South. (gets 39% popular vote) Because of that SC leaves Union a month after the election in December 1860
  • Confederate States of America

    Just 3 months after the election states from the South walked out of the union. Forming the Confederate States of America in February 1861. They elect Jefferson Davis from Mississippi to be their president. Which leads to the civil war.

  • Battle of Antietam

  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    The battle of Fredericksburg was fought Dec 11, 1862-Dec 15,1862. Union loses 13,000 and CSA loses 5,000.
