Compromise of 1850
The Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions on Jan. 1, 1850. Part of the Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Act was changed and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
Senator Stephen Douglas introduced a bill that divided the land west of Missouri into two, Kansas & Nebraska. Argued for Popular Sovereignty - Voters decided. Led to Senator Preston Brooks (SC) attacking Charles Sumner (Mass) in the senate chambers. -
Dred Scott Decision of 1857
Chief Justice Roger Taney's response, "Slaves were private property and thus no decision (rights) needs to be made." -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln (republican & also against slavery which causes conflict later on) and Stephen Douglas (democratic). Ended Oct.15. A famous quote during that time by Lincoln, " A house divided cannot stand." Douglas won the senate seat. -
Election of 1860
Democratic party splits over issue of slavery and republican nominates Lincoln. Lincoln wins election without winning any electoral votes from the South. (gets 39% popular vote) Because of that SC leaves Union a month after the election in December 1860 -
Confederate States of America
Just 3 months after the election states from the South walked out of the union. Forming the Confederate States of America in February 1861. They elect Jefferson Davis from Mississippi to be their president. Which leads to the civil war. -
Fort Sumter
Lincoln sends food and medical supplies to Fort Sumter on April 6,1861 & Jefferson Davis sends order to take Fort Sumter.Beauregard (CSA) open fire on fort on April 12. Fighting begins. -
First Battle of Bull Run
Union winning until Thomas " Stone Wall" Jackson's Virginian's made a stand. Confederate won -
Battle of Shiloh
Grant and Buell defeat Johnston's CSA nearly killing 25,000 people ( April 6, 1862-April 7, 1862) -
Seven Days Battle
A series of six major battles within the 7 days from June 25 to July 1, 1862, near Richmond, Virginia, during the American Civil War. -
Battle of Antietam
Lee invades the North, CSA orders found wrapped around cigars. 12,000 people killed in the first 3 hours. Battle was a draw. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
The battle of Fredericksburg was fought Dec 11, 1862-Dec 15,1862. Union loses 13,000 and CSA loses 5,000. -
Gettysburg
It's the "turning point" Lee's army was looking for supplies. 3 Days nearly 50,000 killed for Union Victory. November 1863. Gettysburg Address " Why we fight, dedication to those men." -
Vicksburg Falls
Cuts the South in half. !864 the south's falling apart. Grant placed in command of all union forces Sherman's march to sea. -
15th Amendment
Reconstruction: " No citizen could be denied the right to vote based on color/race/previous servitude."
